England player ratings against Mexico after wild World Cup night at the Azteca as Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane shine amid Jarell Quansah troubles

Jude Bellingham continued his purple patch with a brace and Harry Kane scored once more as England edged past Mexico 3-2, having had to survive most of the second half with 10 men after Jarell Quansah's red card.

Thomas Tuchel brought Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon onto the wings, while Jarell Quansah started at right-back ahead of Djed Spence.

England weathered the early storm and got to the hydration break unscathed thanks to a good save from Jordan Pickford.

Bellingham pulled the strings once more, partnering strongly with Kane to give England a two-goal lead after 40 minutes.

However, Mexico hit back through Julian Quinones, after England failed to clear a corner.

Quansah's red card for a dangerous tackle threw England's hopes of progressing into further jeopardy, but Kane restored the cushion from the spot seven minutes later.

However, the Bayern Munich striker turned from hero to villain when he gave away a penalty of his own to set up a tense final 20 minutes.

Mexico threw everything they could at the England defence, but they remained firm to bag a rare win at the Azteca and set up a clash with Norway in the quarter-finals.

England

Jordan Pickford - 7 - Made a decent save early on, as well as an acrobatic effort on the brink of half-time to keep England ahead. He started the attack for England's first, and could do little about the two he conceded.

Jarell Quansah - 3 - Struggled occasionally with the Mexican attackers, especially Quinones, which nearly led to an equaliser. His red card was reckless.

Marc Guehi - 6 - He was rarely involved in the defensive skirmishes, which is probably a good sign, but at the same time ultimately shipped two goals, even if he could do little about either.

Ezri Konsa - 5 - His clearance for the first Mexico goal was poor, albeit he was under pressure. Other than that, he was solid alongside Guehi.

Nico O'Reilly - 5 - Struggled with his distribution early on, putting a few passes and throw-ins straight out of play. He struck the ball well to hit a post, but Raul Rangel had it covered. Picked up a needless yellow card for his scuffle with Jorge Sanchez which could have been red on another day.

Declan Rice - 7 - Was unfortunate to get an early yellow card but made up for it with his carry up the pitch for the opening goal. Worked well with Elliot Anderson, and was tireless as the game went on.

Elliot Anderson - 6 - He won the ball back for the second goal with some intense pressing and looked generally tidy in midfield alongside Declan Rice.

Bukayo Saka - 7 - His opening assist showed the spark England need from wide. He fooled the Mexican defence by going on his right foot and put it on a plate for Bellingham. His debatable foul just before half-time offered Mexico a way back into the match.

Jude Bellingham - 9 - Two goals in three minutes put England in complete control and Bellingham showed his all-round brilliance for both. Just as impressive was his clearance before half-time which saved a near-certain goal.

Anthony Gordon - 8 - Looked lively on the left flank and managed to beat Sanchez a couple of times. Also played a part in the second goal and won the penalty for the third goal.

Harry Kane - 8 - Produced a lovely decoy run for the opening goal that opened up space for Bellingham, before bagging the assist for the second goal. His penalty was emphatic under great pressure and far enough in the corner to beat Rangel. The penalty against him was soft, but Kane did not get the ball either.

Substitutes

John Stones - 6 - Used his experience to shore up the defence post-red card. He was not tested much but did not put a foot wrong. The interception in the dying embers of the game helped England fans breathe a bit more easily.

Djed Spence - 7 - England's utility defender stepped up when needed, including with a strong sliding tackle as Mexico nearly broke into the box late on.

Dan Burn - 7 - Won a slew of big headers as Mexico launched a barrage of crosses in the closing stages in search of an equaliser.
