The Brazilian will be out of action for around six months.
Oliveira, who was Betis's leading scorer with 22 goals last season, sustained the injury during his side's 1-0 Champions League victory over Chelsea at the beginning of the month.
It was originally thought that he had fractured a bone in the knee when he clashed with Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho as the two challenged for the ball and would be out of action for a maximum of four months.
Tuesday's tests showed that the cruciate and lateral ligaments had both been torn during the incident.
Oliveira was part of the Brazil squad that won the Copa America in 2004 and the Confederations Cup in 2005.
