The Trinidad and Tobago Express newspaper said thousands of Trinbagonians had flooded onto the streets of the capital Port of Spain after the final whistle and a statement was later released by the country's prime minister.
"Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has declared Thursday, 17th November, 2005, as a public holiday in celebration of Trinidad and Tobago's victory in the World Cup qualifying match against Bahrain," it read.
The team, with the exception of Russell Latapy, were scheduled to arrive back in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday morning.
"The government encourages citizens to use the holiday to participate fully in the welcome celebrations which will start at the Piarco International Airport and continue with a drive to Port of Spain," the statement said.
