LIV Golf South Africa recap - Bryson DeChambeau beats Jon Rahm in play-off to go back-to-back, after both finish on 26-under-par

Bryson DeChambeau looked to have control of the event at Steyn City from the first hole, but Jon Rahm's fantastic last round forced a playoff. Once more though, it was DeChambeau and his trusty three wood which prevailed, with a remarkable second shot setting him up for birdie on the extra 18th and his second successive tour victory. His Crushers also pipped Southern Guards for the teams event.

Bryson goes back-to-back

Bryson DeChambeau won his second LIV Golf event in succession, beating Jon Rahm in a playoff to seal the South Africa event in Steyn City.

The American led from the first hole of the tournament but Rahm's eight-under-par 63 earned him a share of the lead on 26-under-par overall - and they went to play the 18th hole again.

In dramatic scenes, DeChambeau hit his drive into a bog on the left, but after being allowed to re-spot his ball, he sent a three wood within 15 feet. Rahm put his second into the bunker and from there the American had the advantage, taking the hole with a birdie.

DeChambeau's Crushers side also won back-to-back victories, with a special mention to Anirban Lahiri who hit 16-under over the last two rounds to see them past the home Southern Guards, who at one stage had a nine-shot advantage.

Thomas Detry, agonisingly, finished in third place - one too low to qualify for the Masters - alongside Branden Grace and Abraham Ancer.

The tour will move on next to Ancer's Mexico from April 16, where he promises there will be a fantastic atmosphere, but it will do well to beat that created on a memorable weekend at Steyn City - which has been confirmed to host the event again next year.

"It has won the last two tournaments.

DeChambeau hits his second to within fifteen feet. The sweetest connection with his fairway wood and he has a good chance of eagle. Yes, he had the relief, but still on wet grass that was an extraordinary shot.

He sinks the birdie putt and ends on 23-under, heartbreakingly one place too low to qualify for the Masters.

His birdie on the last gives him an eight-under par 63 but more importantly moves the Crushers one clear on 76-under ahead of the Southern Guards.

He has a four-footer for birdie to move to 23-under and third place. Rahm was a little short of the green with his third so is unlikely to birdie.

Not many more clutch putts than that. For himself, for the team, in the pouring rain, he slots home the 6 footer and the individual and teams competitions stay level.

There has not been much negative cheering through the week but the crowd did not want that to go in as it would have put the Crushers one in front of the beloved local Southern Guards.

A par on the last sees him finish the day with a 66 and the leading completed score at the moment. He is in level fourth.

Trouble on 16...

DeChambeau drove into the deep stuff and had to chip onto the fairway, but his third shot is good giving him a decent chance of a par from eight feet away - no gimme though.

At Hole 16, Bryson tees off for the 479-yard hole. In heavy rain, the shot is made that much harder. At Hole 17, Rahm lines up a putt to birdie, and is inches short.

Rahm makes the green on Hole 17, while DeChambeau sends a putt long on Hole 15. It seems like the American could be facing some real pressure on the last few holes.

Hole 15, Rahm has a right-to-left putt from 22 feet away. It's a foot short, and he'll sink it for par, you imagine.

DeChambeau has a similar experience as the status quo is maintained.

Rahm tees off at Hole 14

The Spaniard is looking to charge towards the lead.

DeChambeau got par at Hole 12, and is now teeing off, and is just short of the fairway.

Detry is 23 under, Puig Burmester and Grace are all another shot back.

Guards are three clear

Crushers are 69 under, three short of the Guards, who are 72 under in the final round.

Both the team and the individual events could go down to the wire today.

DeChambeau faces Hole 12 trouble

DeChambeau tees off at Hole 12. It's a 481 yard par four, and he hits a strip of rough, and he strides down the fairway to inspect.

He's still two clear of Rahm, for now.

Tight at the top

Dechambeau has an uphill putt on the third shot of Hole 11. It's a par four, and he just a foot or two short. Rahm attempts a long putt to birdie the 12th, but he too is short.

DeChambeau misses a relatively close range putt and then birdies Hole 10. He moves one clear of Rahm. Had he sunk that first effort, it would have struck a blow to his opponent's morale.

A three-stroke birdie on a par-five Hole 10 moves Rahm to within just one of DeChambeau. The pressure is on both of them to maintain their high standards as we enter the back nine.

DeChambeau birdies again

Another birdie for DeChambeau means he is 25 under par. He's extended his lead once more, pumping his fist as he does so. Rahm and Puig are both three back from him now.

Rahm moves 22 under, so he is now the closest challenger to DeChambeau with 11 holes still to play in Round 4.

DeChambeau three clear

With 12 holes to play, Bryson DeChambeau is three clear, 24 under.

Jon Rahm, David Puig, Branden Grance and Dean Burmester are on 21 under. Abraham Ancer is on 20 under, a stroke ahead of Thomas Detry and Carlos Ortiz. Cam Smith, Scott Vincent, Richard Bland and Charles Howell III are 16 under.

Louis Oosthuizen, leading the charge for the dominant Guards team, is 15 under.

Another birdie, this time on Hole 6, means he now leads Grace by two.

A birdie on Hole 5 inches DeChambeau ahead. He tells fans that he's not able to sign any autographs until he completes his round, but high-fives a couple of kids as the strides to the next hole.

On Hole 5, Branden Grace falls just short of the green with his second stroke. He's -22, along with Dechambeau. At Hole 6, a stroke behind, Burmester looks posed to secure a par after clipping towards the cup from just outside the green. On 7, Puig is in the rough with his second stroke on the par four hole.

Four-way tie at the top

Puig birdies Hole 6 in three strokes. That's now a four-way tie for the lead, alongside DeChambeau, Puig and Burmester.

Burmester starts strong at Hole 5

Burmester tees off at Hole 5 at 21 under. Grace, also at 21 under, is on Hole 4 in some rough ground. Before him, Ancer at 19 under on the same hole, and his second stroke lands him 10 yards or so from the green.

Grace's shot lands him in front of a few trees, which will be tough to negotiate.

Ooisthuezen leads the chanrge for the Guards at Hole 10, who are 67 under and leading the pack.

DeChambeau level with Grace, Burmester closes in

DeChambeau is tied at 21 under with Grace. On the first stroke of hole three, he lands on the green comfortably.

Burmester, a stroke behind, is on the green on hole 4 after just two strokes on the par 5.

Rahm falls short of birdie on hole 3

Jon Rahm on hole three has the chance for birdie. It's a tough left-then-right putt to take on, and he overhits by a couple of yards.

Detry birdies to move to 19 under.

Burmester is now 20 under with a birdie of his own, moving him to one off the lead.

DeChambeau pars his first hole

Dechambeau has a putt of around 22 feet to make on the first hole. It ends just a few inches short, and he ends with a par four in his opening action.

Ancer birdies the same hole to move 19 under, along with Puig. Grace is in second spot, 20 under, one stroke behind DeChambeau. Burmester also creeps up to 19 under.
