Jessica Gadirova set for 'tough and long journey' after 'freak' ACL injury ahead of Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The 19-year-old gymnast has revealed that she has suffered an anterior cruciate knee ligament tear which will likely keep her sidelined for several months. Gadirova suffered the injury during a warm-up at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and says she is expecting a "tough and long journey ahead".

Great Britain’s Jessica Gadirova faces a battle to be fit for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after suffering a "full tear" of her anterior cruciate knee ligament.
The injury occurred during her warm-up for the individual all-around final at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp earlier this month.
Gadirova, who won three gold medals at the European Gymnastics Championships this year, withdrew from the competition and has now confirmed the extent of the injury.
Writing on Instagram, the 19-year-old said: “As most of you are aware I had to withdraw from the remainder of the World Championship due to a knee injury - this has resulted in being a full tear to my ACL.
“It happened on Friday evening just before coming out to compete in the AA [all-around] final. This was a freak accident performing a gymnastics prep not one of my competition skills.“I’m still taking time to process this myself and I know it’s going to be a tough and long journey ahead.
“At this point I don’t know for sure how long but I’ll be doing everything I can with the support of those around me to return to the sport I love as soon as I can.“I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support and love.”
Gadirova won bronze in the team event at Tokyo 2020 alongside twin sister Jennifer, who is also currently out injured.
Jennifer Gadirova wrote in reply to her sister’s message on Instagram: “I will help you every step of the way and we will both be back!”
The gymnastics events at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will start on July 27.
