Islam Makhachev's decision to move up to welterweight has opened the door for Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira to fight for the vacant lightweight title at UFC 317 in Las Vegas. Topuria has the chance to become a two-division champion. They will co-headline the event, with Alexandre Pantoja and Kai Kara-France's fight for the flyweight belt also being named at the top of the billing.

Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira have been confirmed to meet in the main event at UFC 317 and challenge for the lightweight title in Las Vegas on June 28.

The belt is vacant due to Islam Makhachev deciding to move up to the welterweight division - where he will face newly crowned champion Jack Della Maddalena at a later date.

Spanish fighter Topuria has the chance to become a two-division champion, having previously held the featherweight title.

He will arrive in the Octagon with plenty of confidence after back-to-back knockout victories over UFC greats Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway last year.

The exciting Spaniard has won all eight UFC fights and has fought at lightweight before, beating Englishman Jai Herbert in 2022.

As for veteran Oliveira, the former champion’s last outing was a 'Fight of the Night' performance against Michael Chandler at UFC 309 last November.

However, it is his first title fight since he was defeated by Makhachev in 2022.

Oliveira holds the record for the most finishes in UFC history with 20 from 34 bouts.

Britain’s Paddy Pimblett will be paying close attention to the fight after naming Topuria and Oliveira as potential opponents for his next fight.

Pimblett stopped Chandler in the biggest win of his career at UFC 314 in Miami in April.

UFC 317 will be a co-main event, with Topuria and Oliveira sharing top billing with a bout between flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja and Kai Kara-France.
