Marco Bezzecchi rues 'strange moment' after Grand Prix San Marino victory snatched away by Marc Marquez

The headlines on Sunday ultimately belonged to Marc Marquez after he claimed victory in the Grand Prix San Marino at Misano. It moved the Ducati rider within one win of 100 Grand Prix victories, but had things turned out a little differently, it may have been Marco Bezzecchi celebrating at the top of the podium. Nevertheless, there were still plenty of positives for the Aprilia Racing rider.

Marco Bezzecchi was left to reflect on what might have been after being dramatically denied victory by Marc Marquez in the Grand Prix San Marino at Misano.
Bezzecchi held the lead for 11 laps, but the Aprilia Racing rider made a critical error that meant the Italian failed to capitalise on the momentum generated from Saturday's Sprint victory.
The incident happened at Turn 8 on the 12th lap when he ran wide, as eventual winner Marquez took full advantage and was the first to cross over the line.
Bezzecchi explained how a misjudgement with the brakes proved detrimental to his efforts on the day.
"It was tough in braking, especially because, when I tried the different compounds – the medium and the soft – in the rear, the only difference for me was in braking," said Bezzecchi on MotoGP.com’s After the Flag post-race show.
"With the soft, I had something more; it’s a similar sensation that I had already last year, but this year the difference was less, so I was really happy already, because last year I was, I think, the only one that couldn’t use the medium.
"So, then, unfortunately, from Lap 8 or 9, I started to struggle in braking, and Marc [Marquez] was close. We were both on the limit, so it was difficult to understand where I could push more or try to carry on like this.
"On that corner [Turn 8] I made a small mistake, but the bike made a strange movement. I didn’t want to lock the front, so I had to release the front brake a bit and go a little bit wide.
"Because of this, Marc passed me.
"Then, I said ‘Okay, now I try to stay close to him as much as I can to try to bounce back’. But it was not possible, unfortunately."

Despite the disappointment, Bezzecchi was delighted with his consistency across the weekend, and how he went toe-to-toe with championship leader Marquez.
"I think that, besides the victory, this is maybe the best race of my life," he told TNT Sports.
"Because I was super competitive all the weekend – pole position, Sprint win, second place, but close to Marc, who is at the moment the strongest on the grid.
"I'm very happy I gave my whole [effort]. I tried to give the fans the best show that I could.
"I want to say thanks to them for the support. They've been amazing for me, and hopefully you enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone."
The MotoGP season now head to Asia for the next set of races, with the riders going to Japan on the weekend of September 26.
The race in Japan hands Marquez the chance to seal the title, as he holds a 182-point lead over his brother Alex.
For Bezzecchi, his form is picking up - he drew praise from TNT Sports' Neil Hodgson following his win in the Sprint - and he is within eight points of Francesco Bagnaia in third place,
