Pedro Acosta was quickest in Practice at Grand Prix Hungary on Friday afternoon, as Francesco Bagnaia did not make the top 10.

The KTM rider will go straight through to the second qualifying session at Balaton Park on Saturday, with both sessions shown live on TNT Sports and HBO Max on Saturday.

The second-quickest rider in the session was VR46 Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio, with the Italian looking to cut the gap on the top two riders in the world title standings, Aprilia duo Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin.

Bezzecchi leads the title race on 173 points, with Martin on 156 as he continues adapting to a bike largely developed by Bezzecchi during pre‑season testing while managing his injury and fitness issues.

Title leader Bezzecchi was sixth-fastest, with his team-mate and former world champion Martin in ninth, meaning they both proceeded through to Q2.

Bezzecchi has historically struggled to match his Sunday race success in the Sprints, which may give Martin a chance to eat into his deficit over the course of the rest of the campaign.

Aprilia satellite team Trackhouse also enjoyed a good showing in the session.

Last Saturday’s Sprint winner at Grand Prix Italy, Raul Fernandez, was third-quickest, and stable-mate Ai Ogura was fifth.

Also in the top 10 was Diogo Moreira for Honda, and Jack Miller for Pramac Yamaha, in eighth and 10th, respectively.

There was also an appearance for Ducati Lenovo’s current world champion, Marc Marquez.

Marquez was seventh last weekend in Sunday’s full-length race, with the Spaniard making his return from shoulder surgery a little earlier than some had anticipated.

The 33-year-old has played down his chances in the title race already, and was again reticent about making any bold claims ahead of this weekend’s races.

He is currently eighth in the overall standings, a full 102 points off leader Bezzecchi, but TNT Sports expert Neil Hodgson believes that the track in Hungary suits him well.

Hodgson argued that Marquez’s superb ability on left-handed corners gives him a huge advantage on the anticlockwise track at Balaton Park.

He suggested that not only does Marquez believe that he can win here in both races, but that a victory would put him back in the mix for what would be an unlikely title race.

Ducati's other rider, two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia, was 14th, meaning he will have to qualify from Q1 if he is to stand a chance of a decent start on the grid for the weekend's two races.

Cal Crutchlow, standing in at Honda for the injured Johann Zarco, was bottom.
