Luca Martin handed 'crazy' second UCI XCO World Cup career victory after Adrien Boichis crashes at Lenzerheide

After four second-place finishes this year, the Cannondale Factory Racing rider finally broke through at the top of the podium following a relentless, high-speed contest in the Swiss heat.

Boichis had controlled much of the race, and appeared set for victory after launching a decisive attack on the final lap, but a fall while leading transformed the outcome - and opened the door for Martin.

Speaking after just his second World Cup career victory, the Frenchman said: "I'm so happy after three second places, I needed to win. It was a crazy race. In the first part, I tried to stay at the back [of the leading group] and feel my shape.

"The dirt changed after 45 minutes to very slippery, and I had that at the back of my head.

"I knew the last lap would be very dangerous, and it was never finished. When Adrien attacked, I felt like I could come back in the downhill.

"He crashed, it was very slippery, when I saw that I had to go."

The race was aggressive from the start, with Boichis, Mathis Azzaro, Dario Lillo, Martin Vidaurre and Bjorn Riley among the early pacesetters as the field was quickly stretched on the demanding Lenzerheide circuit.

Boichis soon asserted himself, repeatedly driving the tempo on the climbs and forcing a series of selections as the race fragmented.

Azzaro's mechanical before halfway proved pivotal, breaking up the lead group and leaving Boichis clear alongside Vidaurre, Martin and Riley, before further accelerations whittled the front down to a head-to-head between Boichis and Martin by lap five.

The duo traded blows throughout the closing laps, with Martin briefly edging ahead on a technical section before Boichis responded to restore parity. With one lap remaining, Boichis attacked hard and looked in control, only to crash shortly afterwards and lose the advantage.

Martin seized the opportunity immediately, riding clear to seal victory, with Riley completing the podium.

Jenny Rissveds (Canyon XC Racing) continued her dominant form with a second straight UCI XCO World Cup victory, delivering a commanding solo win in hot, dry and dusty conditions.

On a fast, high-speed circuit that contrasted sharply with Leogang's mud, Ronja Blochlinger (Liv Factory Racing) made the early move, opening a small gap on the opening lap, while a leading group featuring Sina Frei, Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Factory Racing) and Laura Stigger formed behind.

The race was disrupted early when the defending champion on this circuit, Alessandra Keller (Thomus maxon), crashed on the first technical descent, dropping out of contention despite a strong recovery ride.

Blochlinger's lead was short-lived as Rissveds launched a decisive second-lap attack, quickly bridging across before riding clear to take control. From there, the world champion steadily built a gap of over a minute, riding unchallenged to the finish.

Behind, Blunk suffered a puncture while in podium contention but recovered strongly to take third, while Blochlinger held on for second after an early solo effort. Rissveds' victory extends her overall World Cup lead after four rounds.

The Swede said: "I'm really happy about today’s race. In short track on Friday, I was pretty exhausted, to be honest. I was just trying to be patient today, but then I realised that I was feeling good."

Meanwhile, in the Under-23 categories, Valentina Corvi (Canyon XC Racing) and Paul Schehl (Lexware Mountainbike Team) took solo victories.
