Team GB are out for redemption after a disappointing Beijing 2022, when they left with just two medals – both in curling. But with genuine contenders across ice and snow, optimism is rising that this could be Britain's most successful Winter Olympic Games ever. With just days to go until the flame is lit at Milano Cortina 2026, here are the British athletes who are primed to make history.

With just days to go until the flame is lit, it's time to talk up Britain's best shot at rewriting the record books.
Curling remains our winter forte – or Scotland's, at least – but this time there are credible medal chances on both ice and snow.

Milano Cortina will be a unique Games, spread across clusters in northern Italy, from Milan's indoor arenas to the Dolomites and the Alps.
And Team GB will arrive with genuine podium prospects in most of them. By our count, a record-breaking Olympics is well within reach.

Britain have won only three medals on snow in their entire Winter Olympic history, all of them bronze. That could soon change.
At just 16, Mia Brookes became the youngest world champion in snowboarding history. Her 2023 slopestyle gold instantly elevated her to Britain's brightest hope on snow.
Brookes topped last season's big air standings and narrowly missed the slopestyle title after skipping the final event.
For the uninitiated, slopestyle is basically downhill skateboarding on snow – rails, jumps and aerial tricks.
Big air is exactly what it sounds like: launch off a massive ramp, throw down your biggest move and hope to land clean.
No Brit has ever won two medals at a single Winter Olympics. Brookes could be the first.

Team GB will play nine round-robin matches in each of the mixed doubles (Feb 4-9), men's (Feb 11-19) and women's (Feb 12-19) curling competitions. The top four in each round-robin will progress to the semi-finals, with the competition culminating in the medal matches.

Those of a certain vintage will remember Rhona Martin's 'Stone of Destiny' at Salt Lake City 2002 – the moment curling entered Britain's sporting folklore.
Two decades later, Eve Muirhead delivered another slice of glory in Beijing. Now retired, she's passed the torch on to the new generation.
Bruce Mouat's men's rink are reigning world champions after a superb campaign in Canada, while Team Morrison take over from Team Muirhead to target the women's podium.
But there are also big medal hopes in the mixed doubles, where Mouat and Jennifer Dodds reunite. They were fourth in Beijing but took silver at the last World Championships.
Make the final in Cortina, and they could face Italian favourites Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner in what would be a raucous showdown.

Forty-two years after Torvill and Dean's 'Bolero' brought Britain to a standstill, a new duo are ready to skate into the spotlight.
Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, world bronze medallists in March, are genuine contenders for Britain's first Olympic skating medal since that iconic duo.
They've become crowd favourites with bold, joyful routines (fans of the Spice Girls and The Proclaimers should be very excited). Milan could be their stage to grab the medal they crave most.

Britain's skeleton dynasty began with Alex Coomber's bronze in 2002, followed by Shelly Rudman's silver, Amy Williams' gold, and Lizzy Yarnold's back-to-back triumphs. But on the men's side, there's only ever been a solitary bronze.
Step forward, Matt Weston and Marcus Wyatt. The Brits finished first and third overall, respectively, in this season's World Cup standings, with the pair incredibly sweeping all seven events between them.
Both are quick learners on new tracks – handy, given Cortina's freshly approved run will be new to everyone. Weston won the World Cup event here last November.
Add Tabitha Stoecker and Amelia Coltman in the team event, and multiple medals are a real possibility.

Freestyle skier Zoe Atkin doesn't need to look far for inspiration – her sister Izzy won slopestyle bronze at Pyeongchang 2018.
Zoe has since stepped out of that shadow, sharing the halfpipe crystal globe last season and winning world gold soon after.
Her biggest obstacle is Chinese superstar Eileen Gu, who is back after missing those worlds through injury. Atkin will need perfection to top the podium, but she's a serious medal contender regardless.

Germany's grip on men's bobsleigh is usually unbreakable – but Brad Hall's crew are the exception.
They won two World Cup races last season and collected podiums throughout the year, establishing themselves as Britain's best medal hope in decades, although this season has seen Germany come back with a vengeance.
Hall, already a double world medallist, is on a mission to bring home Britain's first Olympic bobsleigh medal in over a decade. The four-man looks his strongest bet, but he also goes in the two-man with Taylor Lawrence.

Her challenge? Breaking the dominance of Gu and Mathilde Gremaud – two of the best to ever do it.

Now, at 39 and heading for his fifth Olympics, he's chasing one final miracle.
A sixth-place finish at last year's world championships proved there's still fire in the tank. A medal of any colour would be extraordinary for a man who learned to ski on Lancashire's dry slopes.
