George Ford: Fly-half to miss England rugby tour of Japan and New Zealand with 'pre-existing Achilles injury'

George Ford will miss England’s tour of Japan and New Zealand as a result of a “pre-existing Achilles injury”, the national team announced on Sunday.

The Sale Sharks No. 10 had been in line to take over from Owen Farrell, who took a sabbatical from Test rugby following the recent World Cup.

Coach Steve Borthwick had identified him as his new first-choice during the Six Nations, but ahead of the squad announcement for the tour on Monday, it was confirmed that he will not be included.

A statement read: “George Ford will miss England’s Summer Series to Japan and New Zealand. The fly-half is recovering from a pre-existing Achilles injury and together with Sale Sharks it has been agreed that the 31-year-old will not tour with England this summer.”

Borthwick added: “Naturally we are disappointed that George won’t be with us in Japan and New Zealand. But following specialist medical advice, and in consultation with George himself, we have decided this is the best course of action.

“George is a big part of the England team and is an excellent professional who I know will rehab diligently to ensure he gets himself right as soon as he can.”

The blow has been softened by the return to fitness of Fin Smith, who left the field for Saturday’s Gallagher Premiership Rugby victory for Northampton Saints. He departed on 70 minutes after suffering from cramp.

Harlequins' Marcus Smith is also set to be named, but that leaves Borthwick with the task of choosing another player for the position ahead of the tour if he does not think other players can fill the role.
