Snooker Shoot Out 2024: Elliot Slessor makes history with record lowest winning score against Mostafa Dorgham

Elliot Slessor and Mostafa Dorgham felt the pressure of the Shoot Out format in a remarkably low-scoring match in Leicester on Thursday evening. A new record was set as Slessor eked out an unconvincing victory over his Egyptian opponent. A late blue pot proved the difference after Slessor had benefitted from a fluke red as the clock ticked down at the Mattioli Arena.

Elliot Slessor made history at the 2024 Snooker Shoot Out after beating Mostafa Dorgham 7-1 to record the lowest winning score in the event's history.

In a low-quality match characterised by missed opportunities, Dorgham potted a red and for a time looked to be heading for a remarkable 1-0 victory.

Slessor appeared to be lacking any composure and rushed to get off the mark in an attempt to avoid an ignominious defeat.

He did so fortuitously, with a fluke red and a subsequent blue taking him past Dorgham with the clock ticking down.

It was an unwanted record for both players, with the previous lowest aggregate score being Oliver Lines' 11-2 win over Stan Moody in 2022.

The lowest winning score before this match was Hamim Hussain's 9–7 victory over Peter Lines in 2021.

"That's the Shoot Out for you," said Phil Studd on Eurosport commentary. "Absolutely bonkers.

"There's no justice. A monumental fluke is going to prove to be decisive. It's a record-smashing match at the Shoot Out."

"Absolutely amazing," Reanne Evans said in the Eurosport studio. "I think his [Slessor's] head had gone a little bit, it was 0-0 for so long.

"The fluke came out of nowhere and he [Slessor] puffed his cheeks out as if he got away with one."

Jimmy White added: "Elliot won't care, he's into the next round and he can go again. That's what the Shoot Out is all about, things can be decided on anything."

The final match of the evening between Ali Carter and Chris Wakelin threatened to immediately set a new record, with the score locked at 0-0 for several minutes in an unexpectedly loose match. Carter eventually kicked into gear to win 17-2.

Slessor reached the quarter-final at the last Shoot Out, losing out to Carter, and will need to up his game if he hopes to do the same this year.
