Judd Trump backed up his credentials as favourite to win the English Open with another fantastic performance with his new cue to beat Yuan Sijun. Mark Selby also advanced, while Mark Williams suffered an early exit. Neil Robertson and Zhao Xintong, meanwhile, were eliminated via convincing defeats in the evening session, as the tournament boils down to its last 16.

Famed as the best player never to win a ranking title, Jack Lisowski has not looked like breaking his duck in recent times, but he was excellent in beating Zhao Xintong 4-1 to reach the English Open round-of-16.

The world champion, meanwhile, will wonder how he could play so poorly after having played so well the previous evening.

Though Lisowski enjoyed a good night, he still offered plenty of chances, Zhao was just unable to take them, losing the first three frames of the evening.

Jackson Page has long been known as a talent, but he now looks to be a player, a 4-1 triumph over Neil Robertson, the in-form defending champion, the latest evidence. Judd Trump continued his quest for a third English Open title with a 4-1 win over Yuan Sijun in the last 32 on Wednesday.

The world No. 1 dropped the first frame in Brentwood, but quickly found momentum with breaks of 101, 69 and 61 helping Trump secure a last-16 meeting with Elliot Slessor, who finished with 104 in drubbing close friend Gary Wilson 4-0.

There was also a 4-0 victory for Trump's fellow two-time English Open winner Mark Selby, who produced 119, 75, 55 and 87 in a 4-0 whitewash of Lei Peifan.

But Mark Williams paid a heavy price for missing several balls as he crashed out 4-1 to Zhou Yuelong.

The three-time world champion compiled 61 to pocket the opening frame, but could not build on that strong start as world No. 32 ran in 89, 67, 90 and 136 to complete a merited 4-1 win.

Next up for Zhou is a meeting with an in-form Barry Hawkins, who raced past Tom Ford 4-0, boosted by knocks of 135, 75 and 62.

Judd Trump found some sparkling form with a new cue to reach the last 32 of the English Open with a 4-0 whitewash of former Shoot Out winner Michael Holt in Brentwood.

Holt had chances to win the first and the third frames of the third-round meeting, but was heavily punished with the world No. 1 Trump producing breaks of 55, 107 and 130 to secure a meeting with Yuan Sijun on Wednesday after Yuan edged out Ben Woollaston 4-3.

Trump told TNT Sports he was happy with his performance armed with a new cue for the first time since 2018.

"I fancied a change. I needed some more power. I've had this cue a couple of weeks. I'll try it to see what happens," he said.

"Some of the conditions over the past few years, it is becoming harder and harder to screw the ball back.

"I'm not one to mess about with cues, but you need a refresh every now and then.

"It is up to me to get used to it."

Mark Allen also impressed in a 4-1 victory over Scott Donaldson that saw the former UK and Masters champion weigh in with 78, 67 and 54.

Allen next faces Stuart Bingham or Dylan Emery for a last-16 spot.
