Welcome to our live text coverage of the Champion of Champions 2024 final, which sees Xiao Guodong face Mark Williams at Toughsheet Community Stadium in Bolton. Xiao's route to the final has seen him beat Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Selby and Mark Allen, while Williams has seen off Bai Yulu, Kyren Wilson and Neil Robertson to reach the showpiece match.

He pats himself on the back, encouraged to by Rob Walker. He does't know how he keeps doing it, but at 5-0 he didn't do that mch wrong, Xiao just outplayed him. He can't believe he's picked up another trophy, he wants to play golf. He's got nothing to prove to nayone, he's playing to enjoy it, and had Xiao won he'd have congratulated him. Rob suggests he's one of Great Britain's best-ever sportsman and Mark is embarrassed, not in agreement. What a player.

He's happy the crowd were nice and he thanks them and the Chinese fans. He's played a legend, he learnt a lot, he wants him, Ronnie and John to play for 30 more years. It's been so hard for him to get to here, but he's so happy to play legends, and one table to play a top-16 player, he can concetrate better and he's really enjoying it. He's glad to be seeded for the UK Cahmpionship and he wants to get in the Masters.

Mark's played well tonight; at no point has it seriously looked like he might not win. But he's still got work to do and adrenaline to manage, as much as he might tell us that he's relaxed. He leves himself a delicate cut to left corner ... and look at that! He is relaxed! And this feels almost over.

A fine safety earns Mark the chance to clip into the middle; he plays it well and tucks in behind green. He's played well tonight, and when Xiao's escape hits the wrong ball, he gets in again with a chance to to build a championship-winning break.

Mark misses to right corner and Xioa gets away, opening the pack, but lands on nowt so plays back to baulk off the yellow. So Mark nails a cross-double only to soon have a pink that's much harder than planned, bridging over the white. He gets on tippy-toes, powers it home, and those were two delightful shots. But he then runs out of position; end of break.

It's a tactical start to frame 15, and look at that! Mark lands white a little behind yellow, brown stuck to it from its back corner, and yes obvously spheres don't have corners but you know what I mean. Xiao escapes though, and on we go.

Xiao has a think then sends a starter to the middle, but he's grimacing because he's not ideal to get on to the final red. He ends up leaving himself a mid-ranger to left corner ... and clicks it down. Excellent pot. From here, he should take the frame.

Mark is such a craftsman, and of course as I type he misses a pot – red to right corner – playing for position on the pink. He doesn't leave it though, and then next shot he floats a beaty from middle to corner, only to miss the cursèd pink. Xiao then drains a starter and cannons those cushioned reds ... but neither finish pottable.

My screen crashes so I don't see what Xiao misses, but Mark's at the table and looking likely to empty it of balls. There are two reds stuck together by the side cushion, though, so there's work to do.

The run of the balls is definitely favouring Mark, and when he goes in-off missing with the rest – for the first time in the competition, though he did fluke one earlier today – he leaves nothing, a red sliding down to balk but yellow and green cannoned to cover the pocket. So Xiao lays a snooker, Mark almost flukes a pot with his escape ... but the ball stays out and over the bag. Chance for Xiao and one you feel he must take.

This is another colossal frame. If Mark wins it, it'll be almost impossible to see Xiao winning five before he wins two; if Xiao wins it, who on earth can say? In the meantime, though, it's a tactical start, neither man attempting a pot ... until the underdog leaves one to right corner and hangs his head. But playing it too gently, Mark isn't on the pink to middle so feathers a tight black to left corner, sends a red long to the yellow bag, and after another black he's in prime position.

This game! And how crucial might that stroke of luck turn out to be?

Xiao foul-misses seeking a thin contact and is warned; Xiao isn't convinced he's the width of a full ball at which to aim, so Marcel, the ref checks; Xiao remains unconvinced. So he makes sure to hit one, in the process leaving a chance.

Of course, Mark wasn't just 5-0 up, he was 5-0 and 55-0 up; if Xiao could win from there, having binned Ronnie, Selbz and Mark Allen, the former two from 3-0 and 4-1 down respectively, it'd be one of the great triumphs.

Stephen says if he'd led a final 5-0 and ended up at 5-4, he'd be devastated and need time to recover. But of course he never did and is also a different character to Mark, who is possibly the most equanimous sportsperson in the world. Expect a response from him.

Mark went 5-0 up without really playing that well, it was just Xiao had a shocker. But the underdog improved after the interval and was far superior thereafter, problem being tonight is a different thing entirely.

Another ton for Xiao, this time a 117, and though neither man played all that well this afternoon, we've had plenty of drama and are set up for an absolute banger of a final session.

Xiao has stones for aeons. He might easily have shrunk at 0-5, but look at him now!

Mark will be feelig slightly queasy. An hour ago it looked like he could effectively finish this match this afternoon; instead, he's coming back tonight for a serious scrap.

But he runs out of position so has to hit down on the white to force red into right corner, bridging awkwardly ... and down it goes. A lovely yellow to right-middle follows, and this is brilliant from Xiao, who'll have felt close to humiliated at 5-0, fearful of how bad things might get. From here, he should narrow the gap to one.

Imagine Mark comes out of this session at 5-4 having left 5-0; he'll say it's fine, he's in front, but he won't feel great about losing four frames on the spin. He gets in via long red ... and misses the black! So Xiao strokes a beauty along the top cushion and he's playing nicely now.

Xiao tries to develop the final red off the green - ut's on black cush – cannnot, and it makes no difference to anything.

Terrific shot from Xiao, sending down a red and arriving on to the blue. He then has a long think before taking on another blue, snapping it into left corner, and from here the frame should be his.

Now it's Mark's turn to miss when he shouldn't, pink to right corner, but he doesn't leave one so Xiao plays safe. The contest is intensifying by the minute.

Xiao is into this now, and I really don't know what it is about the satart of matches that's causing him so much agita. But he's well involved now.

And he does. If Xiao could take the final two frames of the afternoon he'd be in a great spot at 4-5; 3-6 would also be OK, but 2-7 woiuld not.

Xiao does well to navigate a route through the balls, and with the reds niceyly spread not unlike a potting drill, he should close out the frame from here.

Starter to Mark then in behind the yellow, as Phil reminds us that Mark lost the 2002 Masters final to Paul Hunter 10-9 after leading 5-0. That feels unlikely here, and Mark rips in another starter .. only to miss a cut-back pink, leaving nowt.

Xiao pots pink and black; he's on the board and the crowd roar their approval. Can he build on that?

The pink isn't far off the side, so blue to it is the key shot. He has various options, choosing to try and promote it – but he doesn't do enough. So he plays safe at the end of a a superb break, knowing it might all be for nothing ... or not because, as I type, Mark plays a dreadful shot to leave it.

Xiao leaves himself a minger of a red – a consequence of a poor pot on the last. He tries to dig in behind and send it along the the top cushion ... and that's a gorgeous pot. Al the clolours will give him 1-5 and even the longest jorney starts with one step.

Xiao steers an excellent starter across the table into the green bag – might that get him going? Er, no. A poor shot means he then has to take on a cut-back into a blind left corner ... and he sinks it well. This is now a really good chance to clear.

Running out of position, Mark considers a speculative plant, gets down, gets up, gets down, gets up ... then does the sensible thing and plays safe.

Stephen wonders if, perhaps, someone left the doors to the arena open, because the weather is inclement and the table looks to be running a little sluggish – two things that could be linked, damp air slowing things down. Meantime Mark keeps potting balls, a lovely recovery to right centre keeping the run going.

Immediately at the start of frame six, Mark gets in, soon breaks the pack, and when he cracks home a nasty one to left corner – the red was on the rail, the white above it – he looks in decent shape.

Mark misses the black and Xiao remains in his seat. We have four more frames to come in this sesh, Xiao will need last least three of them to have a realistic chance this evening.

The frame is secured. The chances of Mark, the player least likely to waver when faced with the finishing line, botching a 5-0 lead, are tiny..

Mark removes balls. Xiao has big problems, and is showing no signs of solving them.

Oh Xiao. Oh mate. Mark leaves one to right-middle and he can't persuade it to drop; he's having an absolute mare out there and it's not nice to watch. This could easily be 5-0.

Mark gets a poor cue-ball so to keep the run going he has to take on a longun ... and he misses to the green, leaving nothing. Or nothing easy! Because Xiao tickles in a starter from middle to right corner, only to land on nowt, and he can't tuck in behind a baulk coloour because one of the two reds is still loitering. So he plays next to the yellow and sits down.

Patiently and methodically, Mark builds.

Mark opens the balls with an attacking safety and, in comms, Stephen notes his ability to play those shots because he's no longer under pressure given his lead. But it's Xiao in first and he quickly breaks the pack off the blue, landing on nothing easy. So it's a red with the rest, played hard – "a shot of desperation" muses Stephen – and I fear that will cost him, especially as there are two security reds in baulk.

Xiao needs to get on the practise table, I think – his arm isn't going at all. He beat Ronnie from 0-3 down and Selbz from 1-4, with less margin for error as those were best of seven and 11 respectively. But Mark J going for a title is not a challenge to undertake from way behind. See you in 15

Mak sends a lovely red to left-middle, and this is going be a mini-sesh sweep. Xiao's got some work to do in the interval.

Until he misses a red to right-middle! But he leaves nothing – that's the way this is going for Xiao now – and is soon back at the table. He nudges the pack, sends a beautiful pot long to the yellow bag, slips black to left corner, and if this mid-distance red goes down, he'll be in superb shape. But it does not, so Xiao goes at one down the side and oh dear me: he doesn't get anywhre near, he cannons the black, and this is surely 4-0.

Hard so to do if Mark keeps nailing pots like the one that gets him in here, a red rifled to right corner. He then works his way on to the black, and looks great – he's playing very nicely now.

Mark secures the frame and if he can break the cluster of threee below the pink spot, there's a ton there for him. He is settled.

Mark eliminates reds such that he's now on the black, takes a moment, and sends it into right corner. Xiao looks perturbed and so he should: if, as looks likely, he loses this frame, he'll desperately need the next, the last of the mini-sesh.

Xiao's highest break so far is 15, which doesn't sound too baf after only two frames, but both have been scrappy, offering him various chances to make more. And it's Mark in first in frame three, easing an opener to right-middlenand quickly building. Trouble for Xiao.

Mark closes out a scrappty one, securing the frame with a nice pink, anc Xiao will agian have to come from behind if he's to beat a legend.

Another snooker from Mark, the final red tight to the side on the baulk line and the white also on that rail, but behind the black; Xiao escapes second go. But then a opoor safety allows his opponent back ion, and this looks like being the frame.

It's Xiao in next butt he final red, along the side rail with the rest, is nasty, and he can't force it down. He does fluke a snooker – Mark ecapes – but he'll be concerned at his current inability to build a break.

Mark misses a plant so Xiao sinks a starter and again plays a poor positional shot; I guess final nerves are still jangling. However this time when he goes at one with the rest, he plays a fine recovery-pot, only to then fail with a cut-back to left corner, the white dropping down left-centre. The balls aren't great, though, so Mark soon lays a snooker behind the pink; the escape is a simple one.

Going at one harder then idea to get on to a colour, Mark hits the jaws and Xiao gets away with a decent pot to right-middle. He'll need to do some work with the pack to make something significant here and almost immediately he's in trouble, an infelicitous kiss leaving him with few options. But he finds a red to left corner ... only to then miss pink with the rest! He's not got going yet – that was an easier pot than those which preceeded it – and I fear that oversight may cost him.

Mark fouls again and, rather than put him back in, Xiao presumably concludes he'll hit second go so takes opn a pot to middle. Which he missses, leaving a chance, and though the balls aren't that well spread, removing them in the correct order ought to allow more and more to become available.

It's Xiao in first, cutting to the yellow, but he can't make much of it. Mark, though – who fouled off the break – now misses a thin contact twice in a row, so the ref warns him, he plays a different shot, and goes in-off, leaving nothing.

Mark slots the final red - it's a really good pot into right corner – and that confirms his lead. This has the makings of a terrific match-up but if Mark wins the safety exchanges as he did here, it's hard to see him losing.

Mark pulls out the one-handed escape, Xiao tapping the table in appreciation ... before landing him tight on the brown, receiving a return-tap, and this is tricker to escape. Naturally Mark still does, though/

Xiao sinks a starter, removes all reds bar the last, then sends that down the table and leaves rthe white behind the black but not tight to it; Mark escapes so he goes again.

A red and a colour will need Xiao needing snookers, and though Mark can't add the next ball to make extra-sure, meaning Xiao returns to the table, he will surely soon be a frame to the good.

Mark works his way through the balls, and there's no reason to think he won't secure the frame at this visit, though he's making it hard for himself – he's just gone to balk because of a poor positional shot.

Every now and again against Selbz, Xiao was forced into a long pot because the risk of taking on a safety shot was greater and here's another to right corner ... which he misses, leaving plenty after careering into a stray red. There are points there for him

Mark said earlier that if he'd beaten Judd Trump in the Saudi final – he lost 10-9 – he'd not have played again until the Masters. A stroke of luck for us all there. Anyhow, Xiao, who you assume won't get away with a dodgy start today, sticks one in the green bag after Mark misses to the corner, works his way up the table off the green, and after essaying the scene, plays a blue that leaves nothing but a long one back to that green bag. He doesnt' get especially close, but Mark can't tidy so we're playing safety.

Well, if Mark plays well he probably wins. However Xiao's safety has been brilliant this week – he had the better of the exchanges against Selbz and how many can say that? If he hits that level today, he's got every chance.

What a week it's been.
Mark J Williams is one of the greatest players we've ever seen, his big-match temperament among the greatest in any sport. But the three-time world champion, two-time UK champion and overall absolute champion has never been a Champion of Champions, and much as he'll make like he's not bothered, make no mistake: he is bothered.
Xiao Guodong, meanwhile, is on a surge so ridiculous it seems ridiculous that he toiled for 17 years on tour before winning his maiden ranking tournament, this year's Wuhan Open. And he's played beautifully this week, coming from well behind to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Selby, prior to whacking Mark Allen.
This is going to be great.
