World Snooker Championship qualifying sees the likes of Ali Carter and Gary Wilson all battling to earn a spot in the main event on April 19. World Snooker Championship qualifying kicked off on Monday in Sheffield as the professional tour battle it out for a place in the main event.
Only the world’s top 16 automatically have a place reserved for the Crucible, with the likes of Ali Carter, Jack Lisowski and Gary Wilson instead subjected to nerve-shredding qualifiers.
Here is everything you need to know about how the World Championship qualifying works and who is competing.
How does qualifying for the World Snooker Championship work?
Players enter the qualifying gauntlet at different stages depending on their seeding.
Round 1 sees players ranked 81 to 112 against those ranked 113 to 144.
Round 2 then has those 32 winners face players ranked 49 to 80.
In Round 3, those 32 winners take on players ranked 17 to 48.
For Round 4, those 32 winners play each other, with the 16 winners going through to the Crucible.

Who are the big names in World Snooker Championship qualifying?
Qualifying includes the likes of Carter, Stuart Bingham, Stephen Maguire, and Ryan Day.
Zhao Xintong is among the notable amateurs, having earned his spot off the back of his performances on the Q Tour this season.
Jimmy White, a six-time Crucible runner-up, saw his hopes of a return to the big stage dashed in the second round of qualifying, while 12-time women’s world champion Reanne Evans fell at the first hurdle.
