A night to forget for Moody

After he played superbly in the morning session to take a 6-3 lead over 2024 world champion Kyren Wilson into the evening, Stan Moody won the evening’s opening frame, but after that, it all went wrong.

Most frustrating for the Yorkshire debutant will be that Wilson only needed one half-century, a 63 in the 12th frame, as he won seven straight frames to reach round two.

The crucial moments came in frame 11 and 14. In the second frame of the night, Moody missed the last red, which would have left Wilson needing snookers. The Kettering man went on to force a re-spotted black, which he won.

Then in the 14th, Moody made a 68-break - the biggest of the evening session - and Wilson needed three snookers. But, perhaps showing the impetuosity of youth, Moody missed on three occasions, two of which were fairly easy escapes for players at this level.

Once level, despite being nowhere near his best, it always looked like Wilson would prevail.

On the other side of the screen, Fan Zhengyi recovered from 2-0 and 3-1 down to level at three and four-each but a 140 total clearance from Shaun Murphy ensures he will hold a narrow lead when the match resumes tomorrow evening.

A fine break to the pink from Moody, but he misses the black and leaves it on for Wilson. And that is the game. Seven franes on the bounce from Wilson. That will be a hard one to stomach for Moody.
