Shaun Murphy is basking in his second Masters crown after beating Kyren Wilson 10-7 on Sunday. Murphy, who hit a historic 147 in the semi-finals, said he "thought these days had gone", but after a stunning week in London he now looks primed for a deep run at the World Championship.

SHAUN SPEAKS

He thought his days at the business end of big tournaments were over, but 20 years after winning his first of these, he has a second. Teaming up with Peter Ebdon helped remind him he used to be quite good at this game.

Shaun also has kind words for Wilson, who he praises as a great world champ, and whose comeback was no surprise as that's what world champs do. The 147 yesterday was one of the greatest moments of his career, and he echoes Kyren's praise for the crowd. Finally, he notes that he's had a good season before now, he just hasn't got silverware, and he still hasn't – but he's got a "damn nice bit of crystal". Well done, Shaun.

He says he threw Shaun in the balls too often and you can't do that the way he's played this week. He proved why he's world champ, fighting to the end, and says Shaun's an old man now so needs it more than him. He's 35, coming into his prime, he's having an amazing season and plans to now go and smash it in Germany. He thinks other players might be jealous of his amazing family unit and is a lucky lad, win or lose. He's gutted to lose, "but I'm gonna consume so many Jagerbombs tonight and have the best night ever. Finally, he praises an amazing tournament and thanks the fans.

Yes he can! Shaun told us it was coming and it was. He's been fantastic this week and thoroughly deserves his second Paul Hunter.

A red, a black, and Shaun clenches fist, punches air, grimmaces. The moment is his, and how he's earned it.

Cut-back to right corner ... and Shaun sinks it beautifully. The look on his coupon, he knows he's close, but again going into the pack, he's on a red, and when the pink vanishes, the lead is 50 with 50 left!

Lovely from Shaun, thrashing down blue and breaking pack. He nudges the pack again and the trophy is almost his.

Not for long. Kyren leaves gap that allows Shaun to go corner-to-corner, ramming down a red. He's on the black and this is a chance to finish things. Can he hold it down?

You've got to laugh. Kyren spanks home a red but knocks the black towards left corner and snookers himself in the pack. He plays what looks like an acceptable escape ... except from near left corner, Shaun sends a starter into the green bag! That is a sensational strike, but he soon runs out of position ... and we're back playing in and out of the bunch.

There's shouting galore as the players return, then some kind of issue with the advertising hoardings. Before long, they start playing in and out of the pack ... then agree a re-rack. Rightly so.

It's not beyond Kyren to win three on the spin – he just did – but to do so again will require a lot. In clearing up, this time Shaun gets exhibition on the blue, and he's nearly there.

Shaun stuns a red into the yellow bag and barring snookers, he's going one away.

Shaun removes the open reds, and though his is not unassailable, with the six remaining reds on cushions, he won't feel stressed. Oh and have a look! He pots one, just about wobbles down a black off the jaw ... and cuts frame-ball to right-corner ... where it stays on the lip. Kyren is still in the frame, just.

The Magician has been playing well for a while now, and won't have fallen out of form during the last three frames. He might not win the frame at this visit but there's enough there for him to at least build a nifty lead.

Trying a thin contact, Kyren misses twice, then just about hits a red on black cush. He'll fancy himself to get the better of this safety exchange, and with four reds already on the top cushion, the sense is that this frame may take a while. Oh! As I type, Kyren impatiently goes hard at one to the corner, misses, sends claret all over, and this is the chance of Shaun's dreams.

Shaun weighs up a plant to right corner ... and splatters it into right corner. That's a great pot and one he needed desperately. But have a look! Cueing downwards, he hits a little across one to right corner, and we could be here some time. Exxxxxccccccellent.

Shaun misses a mid-ranger to right corner and he's not potted for nearly half an hour now. He's not gone cold, more he's been kept cold, and pressure has mounted in the meantime. He'll be relieved Kyren can only score one, but must now proceed from the bottom cushion.

You know you're near the end when both players take breaks between frames and there's a mini-interval after each one.

A 65 break and Kyren closes to within one. We're on a rolling boil now, and this might just mature into a classic.

There are enough accessible balls to get Kyren home in the frame and he hasn't yet looked like missing. He's marching about the table with purpose and this might just be a momentum shift. Shaun will be wondering.

Shaun misses to middle and by a way, then Kyren absolutely nails a taxing double! He's the dominant player now, but can he keep it going? A nicely-opened pack says aye.

My wife and daughter are bingeing Traitors without me. That's how much I love this. A lovely controlled sets Kyren away, but after a black all he has is a four-ball plant to middle; he can't force it down, but leaves the white on the top cushion. This is intensifying!

Wilson 6-8 Murphy

We said it earlier: Kyren knows how to compete. If he can win another, and there's no reason to think he can't, he'd really be talking.

Wilson 5-8 Murphy (64-1)

BADABING! The crowd go wild when Kyren spots and monsters a plant that takes him very close to the frame. Black and another red follows; Shaun has potted one ball in two frames. If he loses the next, he'll feel a way.

Kyren picks off loose balls and it's been a while since Shaun did anything. In comma, Dave notes that he's not won consecutive frames all match ... and he hasn't nabbed this one yet, running out of position. But in laying white next to yellow, he leaves a snooker; Shaun escapes second go.

Is this getting nervy? Well, so it should be. Both players miss balls they shouldn't ... then Kyren powerglides an opener into the yellow bag. A green follows, and from there he builds quickly.

Kyren decides to use the rest for a ball near right corner ... and misses! He'll see that as a wasted opportunity, but leaves no scope for Shaun to punish.

Now then! Shaun goes at a clip to left corner as a shot to nothing, but is so close that the ball remains over the bag; chance for Kyren. If he can to within two, he'll start exerting pressure.

Kyren secures the frame. Shaun knows he must take it, for it will not be freely given.

Kyren knows how to compete, and won't be giving this up. And he leaves himself a horrific cut-back, digging down ... and flows it home. This is developing into a frame-winning contribution.

More safety, then Kyren commits to a longum and slots it well. His problem, though, has not been getting in but staying in. And very soon he has to go at a mean cut-back black; he sinks it well. He must not miss.

Clever effort from Shaun, finding a pot to have a tickle at without risking anything; he gets close. Kyren then misses too, and we're back playing safety.

If he'd potted like this earlier, he'd not have been four frames down at the halfway point, and as I type, he sends an oblique beauty into left-centre then clobbers the pack. But is he on one? Er, not really. Ouch. Once again, Kyren gets in well but for whatever reason can't go on; he plays a decent safety.

A run of 66 is more than enough and leaves Shaun needing two more to win as we go into the interval. It'll take something very special to deny him with this lead, in this form.

Shaun's taking these with alacrity, even by his standards. Kyren will need to win six of the next seven.

A loose positional shot leaves a nasty cut-back ... but Shaun sinks it well, the brown follows, and he's back in decent shape. The way he's played this week, you don't expect him to miss, but snooker is difficult.

Kyren leaves himself a black the entire width of the table ... and it stays out! There's plenty there for Shaun, and this is a huge visit; he will be well aware of the fact.

But with the white in baulk, he can only go in behind the green, doesn't get tight, and Kyren lamps an absolute screamer into left corner. He's playing well tonight, and though he daren't miss, better to be the one at the table than the one sat down.

The frame begins with some excellent safety, then Kyren, in a pickle to find one, wonders if he might as well take on a pot. He opts for a thin contact, missing twice, then when the warning comes he puts his fingers in his ears. Might he now go for the pot? Nope, he plays off a red on to the top cushion, leaving a tempter, which is to say both players recognise that the balls are lovely and this is the most important frame of the match. If Shaun takes it, it might soon be over; if Kyren does, it might go deep.

Kyren breaks down on 95 but that was a fine piece of work, his highest run of the day, and means the next frame is a monster. Here it comes!

This has been a really good break because it wasn't easy at the start, yet each shot has been played with authority. Kyren is one away from the 3-1 mini-session win he needs.

This time, he has a shot at making something sub sub sub sub sub substantial, the pack a little looser. But it won't be easy, especially in the knowledge that any miss might be severely punished. Pressure!

Dead carefully, Kyren snicks a cut towards right-middle ... and it's there, but he can only play safe after adding the yellow. No matter: he sinks another nice starter, but doesn't really have a next red, so it's a yellow with the rest then a safety.

And there it is. Shaun in full cry is a fantastic sight, and he's been at it all week. He always appraises himself honestly and he's been clear he feels in good nick and that something is coming soon. Perhaps tonight!

Shaun secures the frame and will fancy his third ton of the match; only Neil Robertson loves one anywhere near as much.

A proper contribution here would be massive, Shaun getting himself into stroke, Kyren ill at his miss, the match not far off over. But there's work to do first, lots of it, and how the pack-crack goes will go a long way towards determining who wins the frame. Here it comes ... and it's not great, but there's a red to right corner he can attempt with the rest ... and he slots it beautifully, meaning he's 45/45 with it this week. This is going to be the frame.

Off Kyren's break, Shaun goes at one to left corner, misses, and the consequent gift is gratefully accepted. Another one to him here will really get things going, Shaun's sense of fear in particular – imagine, as he will have done, the dent to his ego if he loses from 6-2 up. But have a look! Kyrizz can't cut to middle, and with balls available, The Magician begins working.

Kyren clears the balls and cuts the deficit. Both men knew he had to win that frame, at 25 minutes the longest of the match, and he did.

Shaun sends white the full width of the table to snick into right corner, adds a fantastic brown ... but catches the near jaw potting the next ball; that was close. From here, though, Kyren will seal the frame.

Shaun goes hard and leaves one to right corner; Kyren clicks it home. But he's not on a colour, so can only play safe thereafter.

Shaun hits the blue first time, his red of choice second, and we're back playing safety, Kyren a strong favorite to win it without being out of sight.

Kyren clips towards left corner and the crowd think it's in, but it stays out; no matter. Next go he clips down the simple starter he was left ... but the shot is a poor one, so he's not on anything when he ought to have had options. Instead, it's in behind the yellow near the left side rail, almost the entirety of the tale obscured.

But what's this?! Steering from near the side, he misses to left corner, and will be wanting to barf brain on to baize. But his lead remains a handy one even if there are no safe balls, but forget all of that, there's a fly on a red, and as we all know, there's nothing hilariouser than that.

Kyren chips away at the frame with low-value colors, before taking on a longun to right corner ... and into the leather it goes; lovely shot. He then opens the pack again, screwing off the top cushion, and the frame is now at his mercy.

A poor shot from Shaun leaves a tricky starter for Kyren and he cuts to left corner, ball teetering on the edge ... before dropping. But with only two other reds loose, he'll soon have to dig into the pack and here he goes; it works well enough for now.

Shaun, of course, hands out the safes as he comes down the stairs, then offers the entirety of the crowd a sweeping wave. Kyren, on the other hand, is more understated and pensive; he's not yet free from the fear of embarrassment, never mind in a position to win.

Shaun has his greased into a lively quiff; Kyren has dyed his at least twice this week.

THE MATCH-UP

Shaun is the smoother, more natural potter, Kyren the savvier more composed player. As such, if the former is in form – and he is – you'd expect him to win, and with a four frame advantage four from home, it's hard to look past him. But if the latter can take the opening mini-sesh, he'll begin to wonder.

I don't think he's played that well this week – his single-ball potting, especially from distance, hasn't been as good as it it usually, and his cue-ball control, much improved, hasn't been as tight as, say Shaun's. But he's a terrific match-player and will not have enjoyed the showmanship to which he was subjected on the black at the end of frames seven and eight.

You may have noted him staying down on his shots until the ball is in the pocket. That's to make sure there's no hindering head-movement, and shows how intently he's focused – a naturally quick player and inveterate entertainer, he wants to get on with the next shot, but he's overriding instinct with intellect to do what he knows is the right thing.

I'm buzzing for this. Shaun has been the best player this week and genuinely believes it's his destiny to left this title, tonight. That's a powerful combination. But Kyren knows he can do the necessary and if he gets a decent start, he's in business.

AFTERNOON SESSION ENDS - MURPHY 6-2 WILSON

Kyren could have been 7-1 behind. So will have to take the positives out of picking up two frames ahead of the closing session tonight with another 11 frames to be played. Wilson needs eight of them.

Murphy the dominant scoring force with breaks of 94, 65, 134 and 116 leaving him in the box seat ahead of tonight's closing session when they play for the Paul Hunter Trophy and the £350,000 first prize.

Off we go then for the final frame of the session. Kyren trying to remain within two frames of Murphy by snaring this frame.

What a brilliant break by Murphy. 134 and he finishes it with the double on the black. A 5-2 lead. Halfway up the hill to the winner's podium.

Super shot by Kyren to drain a red at pace along the top cushion. In goes red down side rail. And that should be another frame to Kyren with colours to come.

Murphy can't progress much further though as he tries and fails to make a difficult plant on reds. So reprieve for Kyren in what has been a very scrappy frame.

Wilson with a 24 this time before a tricky red along top cushion eludes him. Seemed to do a lot of work for only 24.

Shaun missing a red to left centre after Kyren just failed to swerve in a red from distance. Kyren then with a red and blue combo before nailing a superb red off the side cushion. Wilson aiming to build a lead with reds and blues.

Shaun heading for a 4-1 lead then in the race to 10. Murphy very much the dominant force out there. The Alpha of the Alexandra Palace. Or something like that.

Murphy with 40, but he then loses position on blue. Didn't expect to see that mishap. Misses a red to left centre, but Wilson well off with a red attempt to yellow pocket. Suddenly Shaun back in among them again. Surely this frame will be a done deal now.

Murphy with a fabulous pot on a blue to yellow bag followed by another excellent cut across the table on red. Looks to be bang at it whenever a chance presents itself.

But he misses a tricky cutback red along top cushion. Blind pot and doesn't drop. That will annoy him.

Kyren with a fine three-ball plant on reds straight off the bat. Wilson absolutely centres a shot with deep screw on yellow to come back for reds. Looking to banish the memory of the previous frame.

Off we go then for the second half of the afternoon. Four more frames to play this avo. Murphy needing two of them to secure a lead ahead of this evening's concluding session.

A quite supreme clearance of 65 from Murphy to pinch the frame on the black. How good is that? 61 from Wilson, but a 65 counter punch from Murphy is quite magnificent. A gut punch really for Kyren.

Onto the colours, and this really should be job done when he leaves the table. A massive steal.

Murphy brings out two reds from the side rail. That is a brilliant shot. Suddenly huge chance is there for a huge steal heading for the mid-sesh.

Break reaches 61 until Kyren misses an easy red. Still life left in this fourth frame. Not easy with three reds left near right side rail.

MURPHY 2-1 WILSON (1-45)

This has been an excellent response by Wilson having been frozen out for the opening two frames. Looks like he is on his way here to restoring parity at 2-2 in this final. Plant on reds has disturbed more reds for Kyren to put away.

MURPHY 2-1 WILSON (1-9)

Fine break-off shot by Kyren for the fourth frame of a possible 19. Murphy with a decent enough response. Wilson then rattles red in jaws with a long attempt before seeing red hit the white and catapult it back to baulk. Shaun comes up with a stunning long red. But he can't drop in the cutback black. Which will frustrate him.

MURPHY 2-0 WILSON (8-77)

Still some work left in this frame perhaps for Wilson as he misses a red on 69. But Murphy misses a pink on eight, and that will be the third frame to the world champion. Back to 2-1 behind in this 50 anniversary final.

MURPHY 2-0 WILSON (0-47)

Great double by Kyren to keep this break doing on a red to right centre. Every chance to get this third frame won in one hit. Both players look well in the mood as Wilson slots a low black and lands perfectly on the reds.

MURPHY 2-0 WILSON (0-28)

Wilson first to the punch in this third frame. Vital that he starts piecing together some points of his own after the fast start by Murphy to this final. Uses black to open up the pack. Fine shot by Kyren. That will do his confidence no harm at all.

MURPHY 1-0 WILSON (78-4)

47 from Murphy to go with the earlier 31, and suddenly it is a 2-0 lead for the 2015 Masters winner. Looking so sharp among the balls.

MURPHY 1-0 WILSON (51-4)

Only four in response from Kyren before he breaks down using an extension to his cue and there is no doubt that Murphy is fairly rampant so far. One eye on building a lead with eight frames to be played this avo. Looks like Murphy is heading 2-0 up.

Shaun is striking the balls with real authority. Reaching a level which few can match when he is in the mood. Can't land on a red from the black, but a lovely cut on a red to left centre keeps break going until green to left middle eludes him. Don't think the contact was clean there. Chance for Kyren to respond in kind.

MURPHY 1-0 WILSON (11-0)

Murphy with a superb opening red before dropping in yellow across table to right middle. Lovely stuff from Murphy. In goes pink to red centre, and suddenly this is another scoring chance for the 2005 world champion.
