Shanghai Masters 2024: Ronnie O'Sullivan to face Judd Trump after wins over Ding Junhui and Si Jiahui

Ronnie O'Sullivan wowed the Shanghai crowd with a break of 131 in his quarter-final victory over Ding Junhui. The world No. 8 battled hard throughout the contest, but the mammoth break from the 'Rocket' was the catalyst for his 6-3 win. O'Sullivan will face Judd Trump in the semi-finals, hoping to win his fifth Shanghai Masters in a row. Trump managed one century break in a 6-2 win over Si Jiahui.

Ronnie O'Sullivan booked a semi-final spot at the 2024 Shanghai Masters after defeating home favourite Ding Junhui 6-3 on Thursday.

O'Sullivan is aiming for a fifth straight Shanghai Masters but he will have to get past Judd Trump, who downed Si Jiahui, in their final-four clash on Saturday.

Earlier on Thursday, Shaun Murphy and Mark Selby made it through to another all-English semi-final, beating Chinese opponents Zhou Yuelong and Pang Junxu respectively.

The 'Rocket' surged into a 2-0 lead with an impressive opening break of 85, agonisingly falling short of a century when a pink failed to drop into a middle pocket.

Ding settled into the match and got on the board in a scrappy third frame and battled hard to level the contest 2-2 in the face of some sloppy play from both players.

O'Sullivan swiftly recovered his form to retake the lead, including sinking a superb pink that also helped break up a stubborn cluster of reds.

Ding refused to back down and a break of 74 gave him parity at 3-3.

And after a decidedly below-par showing up until the midway point, the crowd were offered a treat from O'Sullivan - a rip-roaring 131 break that set him on his way to the win.

A subsequent break of 70 and O'Sullivan was one frame away, which he wrapped up despite leaving the door open for Ding, who could not quite complete a fightback from 62-0 down.

In the other quarter-final of the session, Trump was more comfortable against Si in his 6-2 victory.

The world No. 2 knocked in breaks of 74, 75 and 104 across the contest, refusing to relinquish the lead after going 1-0 up.

By the interval, Trump was 3-1 to the good and cruising, despite Si pulling a frame back soon after.

But the Englishman rattled off the next three frames in a row to set up a mouthwatering semi-final with O'Sullivan.

The pair met in the final of the 2017 Shanghai Masters, with O'Sullivan taking the trophy after a 10-3 victory.

Selby faces off against Murphy in the first semi on Friday at 07:00 UK time, with O'Sullivan and Trump meeting on Saturday at the same time.
