UK Championship 2024: Judd Trump snaps losing run against Kyren Wilson to secure spot in final

Judd Trump booked his place in the final of the UK Championship with victory over Kyren Wilson. World champion Wilson won the opening two frames, but he had no answer as Trump dominated the remainder of the contest at the Barbican in York on Saturday afternoon. Judd Trump claimed a 6-2 win against Kyren Wilson to reach the final of the UK Championship.

World champion Wilson had the upper hand on Trump in recent meetings, with their rivalry taking on Novak Djokovic versus Roger Federer proportions, according to Jimmy White.

But at the Barbican in York on Saturday, Trump rallied from losing the opening two frames to secure the 13th win of his career against Wilson - and in so doing going some way to avenging his defeat to the world No. 2 in the Northern Ireland Open final.

While Trump has been a winning machine, his record in the Triple Crown events is not good - but he is now one win away from securing a second UK crown, 13 years on from his first.

After a false start due to the cue ball needing to be replaced before a ball was struck, Wilson got in first in the opener and made 33 but failed to find position when going up and down the table off the blue.

There was a surprising safety error from Wilson, but he was fortunate to cover a red over the bottom right. Trump mulled over his options before playing an audacious cannon, and he countered with a nerve-settling 43 before failing to lift the penultimate red off the side cushion.

A safety battle ensued, and it was Trump who misjudged a shot and Wilson accepted the gift as he mopped up the two reds and cleared to the pink.

Wilson won a mini-battle again in the second, with an aggressive safety drawing an error from Trump and he picked off a break of 62 to double his lead.

The third was a scrappy affair, and the 21 penalty points Trump picked up from a clever snooker proved pivotal as Wilson missed an extremely tough blue with the rest, and the world No. 1 picked off the balls required to get a frame on the board.

There was a collector’s item in the fourth, as Wilson missed a routine pot with the rest, and he paid the price as Trump found fluency with his eighth century of the week to go in level at the interval.

The fifth boiled down to a battle on the colours, and a slice of luck went in favour of Trump as he inadvertently snookered Wilson when catching the brown a little heavy. Wilson made the escape but left it over the yellow pocket, and Trump knocked it in to move ahead for the first time in the match.

After dominating the early exchanges, Wilson began to struggle as Trump started to take control. Trump eked out an advantage in the sixth and it was one he did not relinquish as his opponent was unable to fashion a counter.

Wilson returned to his seat with a resigned look on his face after a miss in the seventh, and his concerns were well-founded as Trump fashioned a run of 65 to move within one frame of victory.

Trump was a level below the brilliance he produced in his win over Zhang Anda in the quarter-finals, but he showed his B game is an effective one as he suffocated Wilson.

The job was completed in the eighth, and in style. Wilson left a red out in the open from his break, and Trump knocked it and raced through a run of 100 to set up a meeting with either Mark Allen or Barry Hawkins in the final.
