Mark Williams earlier held off fellow world champion Mark Selby 5-3 on Wednesday to book his spot in the quarter-finals and a meeting with Zhang Anda on Thursday. Gary Wilson will face John Higgins in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open on Thursday after the former Scottish Open and Welsh Open winner edged out world No. 1 Judd Trump 5-4 in a fierce last-16 joust.

In a match which he never led, inspired Wallsend potter Wilson saved the best for last by dominating the final two frames to secure a meeting with four-time Crucible winner Higgins, who eased past Tom Ford 5-1.

Trump was bidding to claim a second Wuhan Open title in three years, and played well in rolling in breaks of 68, 57 and 58, but he met an obdurate opponent in Wilson, who responded with 103 and 82 in a high-quality contest that produced a thrilling number of long pots.

Higgins had an easier Wednesday afternoon as he compiled knocks of 73 and 55 to end Ford's hopes.

There was also a 5-2 win for Si Jiahui against Stephen Maguire, which saw him run in 127 and 113 with Maguire making 120 after failing with a 147 attempt in the sixth frame, while Mark Allen was too strong for Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in a 5-1 success.

Earlier in the day, Mark Williams showed his mettle to complete a 5-3 win over Mark Selby that saw him close out victory with two 60+ breaks after his fellow world champion had levelled at 3-3 from 3-0 behind with a 137 and 84.

Williams meets Zhang Anda at 07:00 UK time on Thursday morning, live on TNT Sports and discovery+, with defending champion Xiao Guodong taking on 18-year-old Stan Moody in the opening quarter-final matches.

A terrific match between two champions, legends and geniuses was eventually won by Mark Williams, who prevailed over Mark Selby by a score of 5-3 Williams started superbly, winning the first three frames – though two were stolen on the final black. Selby, though, didn't panic, responding superbly either side of the interval to level the match.

But though it seemed like momentum was with him, it's not often Williams loses four frames on the spin and the 50-year-old rediscovered his form in impressive style, closing out a victory to set up a last-eight meeting with either Zhang Anda or Aaron Hill.

Mark clears to the final red, just off the side, dropping in behind it off the black. It's not an easy pot, especially with the rest, but you'd back him to sink it ... and he does. So it's blue to land behind the yellow, just off the baulk rail ... and it's there. Green for three in a row...

Willo looks at a cut-back to left corner, decides he's taking it on ... and misses. It might just cost him the frame because, the way Selbz is playing, you'd back him to do enough here, though there are a couple of difficult balls to pot.

And Willo rolls in a very nice starter but, looking to keep the run going with one sent long to yellow bag, he misses; that's the third time he's not been able to sink one of those. It doesn't cost him much, though, as Selbz is too straight on the blue to break the reds ... but have a look! He opens the pack, tucks in behind the brown and that could well be a frame-winning shot, even from 44 points behind. But Willo misses narrowly, twice, then finds what he's after; this is such a cerebral battle.

So close does he get that the ball remains on the lip, and this should be another frame back.

It'll sting Selbz something fierce if he loses this frame, given the investment of energy and the score, but he bags the final red. The green, though, is in baulk on the side rail; he looks to get behind it but the angle is a little bit wide; if he misses, with the rest for extra difficulty, it could well cost the frame. That's a lot of pressure and he can't force it down, but has he left it? Yes he has, and this is going to be a second Willo steal on the black!

Slebz fgoes at a cut from middle to corner ... and that's beautifully dispatched. The yellow will follow, but can he screw almost the full diag of the table to develop the final red? He cannot, and the ref calls Mark Williams at break's end before quickly correcting himself.

A red is worked loose and Selbz sinks it ... then follows through into the bag. But the two remaining balls are still safe, so the struggle continues.

Goodness. Selbz slides off a red ... and into left corner. But Willo can't make much of the opportunity and very quickly the black moseys over right corner, the three remaining reds soon clustered above it. Early in the frame, this might well be a re-rack; instead, we'll get some delicate safety.

Yes he will and he clicks it home with safety in mind, then rolls up behind the green; Willo's first escape is left short, likewise his second and third. A thin cut with the rest to right corner ... and down goes the black. If we've seen this once, we've seen it a million times ... but next ball, to middle, stops out. It wasn't easy, but I didn't expect that, and it might mean the frame. Except looking for a cannon off the blue, Selbz somehow sneaks between all the reds, so it's another safety with a still-healthy lead.

Unable to see a safety, Mark takes on an oblique mid-ranger to left corner ... and that's a gorgeous effort, typically so. He couldn't afford to miss, and he didn't. But can he parlay the start into something more substantial?
