Gary Wilson shoots down the Rocket

Ronnie O’Sullivan suffered a 5-2 defeat against the Tyneside Terror, who claimed two centuries to make the semi-finals of the Xi'an Grand Prix.

Wilson was by far the better player of the match, marking his 23rd and 24th tons of this season, the highest of anyone on the tour.

He had the better start to make it 3-0, floating the rest in a tricky shot to start his winning break in the first frame, and then claiming a 101 break in the second frame.

The Rocket seemed to get some momentum, picking up two frames to bring the deficit back down to one, but a single brilliant visit to the table saw Wilson’s second century of 120 to turn the tide.

It was a close final frame as O’Sullivan seemed to pick up a good break to put himself 52-8 in front, but an open table and a calm countenance meant that Wilson was able to seal the deal.

On the other table

Big claps for local favourite Ding Junhui as he wins this frame to make it 2-4 and keep his chances alive against Shaun Murphy.

VICTORY: O'Sullivan 2-5 Wilson

Wilson can see the way through, and the table was in a good spot for him to finish off the reds. The shot from yellow to green is a little tricky still, however, and it is O'Sullivan's only chance at stopping Wilson.

The cue ball travels a little too far against the cushion, and it isn't a great angle on the green. Wilson gets the job done, and he only needs the blue and pink to earn his place in the semis.

He makes it! The Tyneside Terror is through, and he puts an end to Ronnie O'Sullivan's brilliant run at the Xi'an Grand Prix.

O'Sullivan 2-4 Wilson (52-16)

It is an open table, and Wilson could catch up just yet. He clears a snooker, but leaves O'Sullivan a chance at the red. But he misses, and opens up a beautiful opportunity for Gary Wilson now.

O'Sullivan needs something big in this frame if he wants to keep his tournament hopes alive. He is on a break now, but he cannot afford to let Wilson return to the table.

He needs to break the pack of reds if he wants to continue much further, and he manages to do so a little while later off the blue. He plays the red, but accidentally leaves himself a clean line on only the green. It isn't a done deal yet, and he will have to play a safety.

O'Sullivan 2-4 Wilson

A resounding pot of the green, and Wilson brings the white down over to the red. Still not the simplest shot, but it is well played. Off the black, he manages to pull the cue ball back to put it in the middle of the pack of reds, and with that red, he has all but sealed this frame on this one visit.

He claims yet another century to derail O'Sullivan's momentum, but pots the white off the pink to end the frame on 120. The Tyneside Terror is just one step away from the semi-finals of the Xi'an Grand Prix.

O'Sullivan 2-3 Wilson (0-50)

Wilson is first to score again, and he is finding himself a good break. He hasn't quite been able to fully capitalise on his other chances so far, allowing O'Sullivan to catch up the last two frames.

He is playing well, and he could do it with this one visit to the table. He is currently 50 up on this break.

The other side

Ding Junhui is desperately trying to stay in this match as he is 4-1 down against Shaun Murphy.

O'Sullivan 2-3 Wilson

O'Sullivan gestures for the cue ball to be cleaned not once but twice, and then neatly pots the black. But he promptly asks for the black to be cleaned as well, and he takes a brief seat as the referee has a quick scrub of whatever O'Sullivan has spotted.

There is something that he just isn't happy about the black as he has another look at it, but starts potting the colours nonetheless. It is an odd one as the pink is at the opposite end of the table, and he takes his second frame with a near fluke.

O'Sullivan 1-3 Wilson (53-31)

A nice shot from Wilson on the black, but his next shot bounces the red between the jaws of the bottom-right pocket. O'Sullivan picks that one up, but can only score eight on this break.

Wilson leaves a red wide open for O'Sullivan, another chance that the Rocket desperately needs to catch up. He pots the black, and brings one of the two reds off the cushion. He promptly pulls the other one up with his shot on the red.

O'Sullivan 1-3 Wilson (6-23)

Good chance for Wilson now, it is just a matter of whether he can convert it. The rest is back out to pot the pink into the bottom-right, and it gets put on the brown spot. Not much left for Wilson, and he snookers O'Sullivan.

A bold attempt from Wilson across the table that ricochets, but O'Sullivan just misses his own shot as the red bounces off the jaws. The reds are in a good spot for the player who gets his foot through the door first.

We are back to a game of safeties, though a loose red gives O'Sullivan a half chance for his first break.

On the other table

It is still Ding 1-3 Murphy, though Murphy is the only one with points in this fifth frame. The Chinese crowd will be dismayed if the Dragon bows out now, but if Murphy continues to play well, he could be up for a back-to-back title after his English Open victory.

O'Sullivan 1-3 Wilson

This is O'Sullivan's best chance so far today to make up some ground, and we are getting a glimpse of just what he can do when the door is left open.

It is an inspired O'Sullivan that pots the red firmly into the middle pocket, and his next miss doesn't matter as he scoops up his first frame of the match.

We go now into the interval.

Wilson takes it off the cushion for a thin shot on the red into the bottom-right corner, and he continues to lead.

Shortly after however, he makes his first safety mistake to foul, and O'Sullivan gets his first points this frame.

Another frustrating mistake for Wilson under pressure as he pots the white. The Rocket needs some magic here if he wants to wipe that goose egg off the scoreboard.

At the other table

Not looking great for Ding as the Magician is 3-1 up. Will the tide turn, or will the Chinese player miss out on the semi-finals?

O'Sullivan leaves a red over the bottom-right corner in another uncharacteristic mistake, and Wilson promptly sinks it.

A brief dilemma for Wilson as the pink goes back on the spot, and he has to work around it. But he picks out a red and gives himself a nice line on the pink.

Wilson has run away with this frame with a break of 80, and he denies the Rocket a single point, who until now, had only dropped three frames in this tournament.

O'Sullivan 0-2 Wilson (0-4)

Another foul for O'Sullivan as he pots the cue ball again! Things haven't been lining up for the Rocket so far, but there is still plenty of time yet.

On the other table, Shaun Murphy leads Ding Junhui 2-1.

Wilson is making the most out of this opportunity, taking his shots well and he is quickly onto the colours. He is playing confidently, and he punishes O'Sullivan by clearing the table on a break of 101.

It marks a beautiful century from the Tyneside Terror, and he is two up. He is on 23 centuries this season, the most on the tour.

O'Sullivan 0-1 Wilson (28-24)

Another miss by O'Sullivan, but on his next shot, he finds the thin edge he wanted off the red.

Too thick by Wilson to scatter the reds, though fortunately, he doesn't drop a chance. Both players are loath to make an error, given how well they have both played in the tournament so far.

O'Sullivan scores a fluke in a big stroke of luck, as he ends up on the black as well. A decent break ended by a near miss off the left-middle, which leaves Wilson wide open to snatch that one and then the blue.

Both men are playing safeties now, and Wilson fouls on a two-cushion attempt at the reds.

A potential mistake by O'Sullivan, and Wilson snaps it up. Could he be off to the races again?

But it is too much off the brown, and his break ends there.

O'Sullivan 0-1 Wilson (0-9)

A curious error from The Rocket on his first break as the cue ball bounces back up the table and into the green pocket.

Wilson follows with a good shot, but he hits it almost too well as the cue ball travels further than he would have liked. He tucks it behind the yellow and brown instead.

O'Sullivan fouls, and retakes the shot.

Wilson gets to the colours and misses the yellow, but it doesn't matter as his break of 77 means he takes the first lead of this match.

Meanwhile, Murphy has just taken the first frame as well against Ding.

O'Sullivan leaves a frustrating shot for Wilson as the line for his cue is disrupted by the black. The chance is there, but Wilson almost has to float his rest in a delicate shot, but manages to pot the red into the green pocket.

He breaks the pack, and that brilliant shot could be his ticket to winning the first frame.

And we are off! Gary Wilson with the first break, though we pause briefly as the players note some particles in the air and on the cloth.

O'Sullivan starts his break, into the bottom-left and then up for the yellow. It's not the most brilliant pack, he has some work to do if he intends to continue.

Coming up

We have two exciting matches ahead as Ronnie O’Sullivan faces Gary Wilson, and Shaun Murphy looks to defeat home favourite Ding Junhui. O’Sullivan, Murphy, and Ding marked two centuries each in their last Round of 16 matches, and Wilson breezed past all but one of his matches, including a 5-0 defeat of He Guoqiang yesterday.

On Wednesday, O’Sullivan claimed that he has been hitting his best in a decade, while Murphy was in blistering form to whitewash Kyren Wilson 5-0. Ding Junhui will fight to be the only Chinese player in the finals after compatriot Lyu Haotian lost to Mark Williams earlier today.

Earlier today

This morning, Mark Williams claimed a 5-4 victory over Lyu Haotian, while Daniel Wells surged ahead of Liam Pullen 5-2 for a ticket to the next round. The two Welshmen will face each other in the semi-finals tomorrow.
