World No. 1 Jannik Sinner earned his first ATP Tour Finals title with a straight-sets victory over Taylor Fritz in Turin. The Italian came through 6-4 6-4 on home turf, and was roared on by an electric crowd at the Inalpi Arena as he closed out victory in one hour and 25 minutes. It is the 23-year-old's eighth title of the year, and he ends the season on top of the rankings.

Jannik Sinner won his first ATP Tour Finals title with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Taylor Fritz in Turin.

Sinner, the world No. 1, was rarely troubled by the American, wrapping up the 6-4 6-4 encounter in one hour and 25 minutes and inflicting a second defeat on Fritz in the season-ending event.

The Italian was buoyed by a fervent home crowd who loudly applauded and cheered every point he won, and he continued his excellent form in the season finale, following up his comfortable semi-final victory over Casper Ruud with another dominant performance against the fifth seed, who had upset Paris Masters champion and world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the last four.

Fritz began the affair positively, looking to take the match to Sinner with strong forehands to follow up his big serves, but that serve was finally breached in the seventh game as Sinner converted his fourth break point with a delicate drop shot, having let his third slip by with a backhand that looped long.

He wrapped up the first set in 41 minutes, closing it out by firing down a wide ace that Fritz could not get near on the backhand side, but that was not before the American had had a sniff at a break-back point which Sinner dealt with confidently.

It was the fifth game of the second where the decisive break came, as Sinner began to take advantage of a series of errors creeping into his opponent's game, and the American lashed a forehand long as the top seed edged closer to the title with just over an hour on the clock.

Sinner's serving was near-impeccable, as the Australian Open and US Open champion crashed down a further two aces to force Fritz to serve to stay in the tie at 5-3, which he duly did - to love - but there was an expectation that his race was run.

He needed just the first of his two championship points, as a final Fritz forehand flew into the tramlines, to become the first man since Ivan Lendl in 1986 to win the ATP Finals tournament without dropping a set, as confirmed by the ATP.

He also becomes the first home winner of the event since Andy Murray achieved the feat in London in 2016.

“It’s amazing," Sinner said. "An amazing week.

"For me, it’s the first title in Italy. It means so much to me. I’m very, very happy about that, and it’s something very special.

“I just tried to understand whatever works best for each opponent; playing my best possible tennis. That was the key. It was a high-level tournament from my side. At times, I couldn’t play better.”
