The tennis event at the Paris Olympic Games is over, with Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and China’s Zheng Qinwen winning singles gold medals. In just three weeks the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, will get started. But which players are back in action this week at the ATP/WTA 1000 Canadian Open and which stars will be missing the tournaments in Montreal and Toronto following the Olympics?

It’s a return to the tour this week for many tennis players with the ATP/WTA 1000 Canadian Open.
The last week has seen most of the top stars competing at the Paris Olympics, with Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and China’s Zheng Qinwen winning singles gold medals.
But with just three weeks to go until the US Open, it’s now time for the hard-court summer.
The first tournament of the month is the Canadian Open, with the men’s event played in Montreal and the women’s event in Toronto.
Both start on August 6 and conclude on August 12, but which players will be missing following their exertions at the Olympics?
Novak Djokovic
After completing the career Golden Slam by winning Olympic gold, Novak Djokovic will not be competing at the Canadian Open.
Djokovic’s decision was confirmed at the start of the week and it remains to be seen whether he returns in time for the Cincinnati Open which begins on August 13.
Speaking after beating Carlos Alcaraz in the Olympic final, Djokovic said: “Just starting my celebration, I can’t wait for what’s coming up in the next 48 hours.”
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will be top seed at the tournament after missing the Olympics due to injury.
The second seed will be Alexander Zverev, followed by Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz.
Carlos Alcaraz
Olympic silver medallist Carlos Alcaraz will be competing in Montreal.
"It has been a very long season for me and due to the accumulation of matches and fatigue, I will not be able to play in Montreal this year,” said Alcaraz, who has won two Grand Slam titles this year.
"I was really looking forward to coming back to Canada and enjoying the love of the fans. Hope to see everyone in Montreal in the years to come!”
Alcaraz was left in tears following his defeat to Djokovic in a high-quality Olympic final.

Andy Murray
Andy Murray will not be back for a 13th appearance at the Canadian Open after retiring from tennis.
The former world No. 1 bowed out with a thrilling run to the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles at the Paris Olympics alongside Dan Evans.
Iga Swiatek
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will not play the WTA event in Toronto.
Swiatek won bronze for Poland at the Paris Olympics and will delay the start of her hard-court summer until likely Cincinnati.
“I’m sorry to announce that due to overall fatigue caused by the last couple of weeks on the court, I need to withdraw from the tournament in Toronto,” said Swiatek.
“Due to an intense tennis schedule with the Olympics taking place this year and changing surfaces, I need more time to rest and recover in order to be ready to play the US swing in good health and at my best possible level. Looking forward to playing in Toronto next time!”

Swiatek 'different class' as she bounces back from heartbreak to claim bronze

Elena Rybakina
World No. 4 Elena Rybakina will miss the Canadian Open due to acute bronchitis, which also prevented her from competing for Kazakhstan at the Olympics.
"Despite my best efforts to recover in time, my current health condition does not allow me to compete at the level required,” said Rybakina.
“Competing in Canada is always a special experience and I am looking forward to performing there again next year.”
Jasmine Paolini
What a season it has been for Jasmine Paolini.
French Open final, Wimbledon final, and Olympic doubles gold for Italy.
The world No. 5 will not be playing in Toronto because of the quick turnaround following the Olympics.
Danielle Collins
Danielle Collins is set for a US farewell this summer before retiring at the end of the season.
But the 30-year-old will not be in Toronto after retiring from injury against Iga Swiatek at the Olympics.

Maria Sakkari
World No. 9 Maria Sakkari misses out on the Canadian Open due to a shoulder injury.
Greece's Sakkari lost in the third round of the singles at the Olympics and played in women's doubles and mixed doubles.
Barbora Krejcikova
Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova will not be playing in Toronto due to a thigh injury.
“The past four weeks have been incredible; however, the intense schedule has taken a toll on my body, and I need to prioritise my health to ensure I can continue competing at my best,” said Krejcikova, who made the quarter-finals of both the singles and women’s doubles at the Olympics.
“Thank you for your understanding and support, and I look forward to returning to the court soon.”
Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu continued her encouraging summer form with a run to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in Washington DC.
However, she will not be playing at the Canadian Open.
Raducanu was not ranked high enough to gain direct entry and also did not receive a wild card for the tournament.
Last month it was announced that she was entered into the qualifying draw, however she has withdrawn and will not take part in qualifying.
It would have been the first time Raducanu had played qualifying since her memorable run at the 2021 US Open, when she won as a qualifier.
