Jannik Sinner beats Felix Auger-Aliassime to win Paris Masters and reclaim world No. 1 status from Carlos Alcaraz: 'Amazing year'

There is a new world No. 1 after Jannik Sinner won his first ATP Masters 1000 title of the year in Paris with a straight-sets victory over Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. Sinner, who will look to end the season as the top-ranked player at the ATP Finals in Turin later this month, reflected on an "amazing year", which has included memorable battles with Carlos Alcaraz.

Jannik Sinner hailed "an amazing year" after he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime to win the Paris Masters and become world No. 1.

The Italian won 6-4 7-6(4) in the French capital to secure his first ATP Masters 1000 title of the season in the final event.

As a result, Sinner climbed above Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP rankings, having dropped to second after he was beaten by the Spaniard in September's US Open final.

"The past couple of months have been amazing. We tried to work on things, trying to improve as a player and seeing this kind of result makes me extremely happy," Sinner said.

"It has been an amazing year no matter what comes in Turin [Nitto ATP Finals]."

Sinner was on top from the off against Auger-Aliassime, dropping just three points across his five service games in the opening set.

While strong on his own serve, Auger-Aliassime did not threaten to break as Sinner won 93% of points on his first serve in the opening set.

The crucial break went the way of the Wimbledon champion, who looked at his imperious best.

Auger-Aliassime improved in the second set, though, saving several break points before taking a 4-3 lead.

Sinner remained consistent on his serve, despite being tested by his Canadian opponent, and the set went to a tie-break.

A mini-break for Sinner proved decisive in the tie-break, and there was no way back for Auger-Aliassime.

The 24-year-old was victorious and lifted the trophy for the first time. Crucially, he moved 250 points above Alcaraz - who was eliminated by Cameron Norrie in the second round - in the rankings.

"It's huge, honestly. It was such an intense final here and we both knew what was on the line," Sinner said.

"For him, it's a very tough and difficult spot, but from my side, I'm extremely happy."

He added: "He was serving extremely well. You have to use your small chances well."

Auger-Aliassime was out to beat Sinner to boost his hopes of qualification for the ATP Finals, which gets underway on November 9.

The 25-year-old, who has won titles in Adelaide, Montpellier and Brussels this year, will climb to eighth in the world after the Paris Masters, and only the world's top eight compete in the season-ending ATP Finals.

Auger-Aliassime will head to the Moselle Open in Metz with a narrow lead over world No. 9 Lorenzo Musetti.

Sinner will, of course, be there in Turin after extending his winning run on indoor hard courts to 26 matches, stretching back to the 2023 Davis Cup Finals.

Alcaraz will also be in Turin, looking to bounce back from a disappointing Paris Masters.

"I came here really well. I came here with a lot of energy. I came here thinking that I could do good results because I have been playing really good tennis," Alcaraz said.

"This is the best year for me in terms of playing at the end of the year. So I've been talking with some other players, with my team, that I feel great.

"Other years I felt exhausted, I felt tired, I felt mentally, physically. But this year I feel good. I skipped Shanghai. I have been at home [for some] days, so I could enjoy myself there and relax, help the battery, so I don't know what happened here.

"It is a tournament that is really difficult for me to play well, but I will figure it out, and I will end up playing great tennis here, for sure."
