World No. 1 Sinner has now won 32 straight matches at Masters level, the highest tier of men’s tennis below Grand Slams, breaking the previous record set by Novak Djokovic in 2011.
Sinner’s last defeat at Masters level was in October 2025 in Shanghai and he looks a heavy favourite to not only complete the career Golden Masters by winning the title in Rome but also to achieve the career Grand Slam with victory at the French Open.
If Sinner does win the Italian Open he will join Djokovic as the only men to have won all nine Masters events.
”I don’t play for records, I play for my story, [but] at the same time it means a lot to me,” said Sinner afterwards.
”Tomorrow is another day and another opponent. We will play in different conditions in a night match. Now the highest priority is to try and recover as much as I can physically.”
Sinner will face seventh seed Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, after he beat lucky loser Martin Landaluce in three sets.
The Italian now has 27 consecutive wins since the start of Indian Wells in March and has only dropped two sets in that time.
He set the tone early against Rublev, winning a lengthy rally with a forehand winner and breaking in the first game.
Sinner fended off two break points in the fourth game and then broke to love to move 5-2 ahead.
Like so many of Sinner’s recent opponents, Rublev had no answer to the relentless and precise hitting from the world No. 1.
The second set quickly got away from Rublev as he fell 4-1 behind.

The Russian managed to get one break back and pushed for another as Sinner appeared to be tiring slightly with the finish line in sight.
However, Sinner closed out the win on his own serve to advance and make history.
The French Open starts on Sunday, May 24, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max, with Sinner the top seed in the men's draw.
Sinner was beaten by Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling final a year ago but a rematch is off the cards as Alcaraz is out with injury.
