Exclusive: Jannik Sinner on winning consecutive Australian Open titles – ‘I’m well-prepared for tough battles’

Jannik Sinner could not have wished for a better start to the 2025 season. The Italian continued his dominance at Grand Slams by becoming Australian Open champion for the second consecutive year. Sinner completed the feat with a straight-sets win over Alexander Zverev in Melbourne and, after securing another title, he told Eurosport that he is "well-prepared for tough battles".

Jannik Sinner told Eurosport that he is "well-prepared for tough battles" after he started the 2025 season in style by winning back-to-back Australian Open titles.

The Italian was at his dominant best in Sunday's final in Melbourne against Alexander Zverev as he won 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3 to defend his title.

It took Sinner just under three hours to come away victorious once again in Australia as Zverev appeared to fade away as the match went on.

Zverev was the last man to defeat Sinner on hard courts in a Grand Slam, but the German was unable to repeat the feat and showed his frustration on numerous occasions throughout the contest.

Sinner showed the necessary poise and conviction at the crucial moments to come away with the third Grand Slam of his career.

Speaking exclusively to Eurosport’s Barbara Schett after the match, Sinner said he felt "extra pressure" to retain his title.

"Coming here defending the title, it’s always different," he said. "You have this extra pressure, but I always enjoy it. Every match has been very, very tough and [in] the final, the pressure is different.

"It’s a tough day for Sascha [Zverev] because he already had some Grand Slam finals – very tough ones. I got lucky in the second set tie-break with the net cord and everything. He was a bit down, and I tried to keep him up a little bit. It was very difficult.

"But talking from my side, I’m obviously very happy. My team, we know how hard we worked for this one, and I appreciate all the support I had these two weeks."

It was not an easy ride to his second Australian Open triumph as Sinner struggled with discomfort during his last-16 match against Holger Rune, but there were no issues in the final, although he admitted to facing challenges.

"I do struggle sometimes inside, but with tennis, you have days when you feel a bit worse, but in my mind, I know that every day can be different, and I can raise my level from every day and that’s what I was searching for," he explained.

"Coming here without playing any tournaments before, not knowing exactly what’s going to come, and I just tried to stay very focused about these moments. In my mind, I know that I’m well-prepared for tough battles, and I’ve shown that for these two weeks."

Sinner also paid tribute to his family for their continued support in Italy.

He added: "They know how much it means to share this one with my family, with my parents, with my brother who is actually here so it’s amazing.

"It’s amazing where I’m from in such a small village and bringing home this kind of trophy, it’s amazing, and I’m very happy to share this with them."
