Australian Open 2025: Cameron Norrie says Nick Kyrgios victory 'just the beginning' for British hopeful Jacob Fearnley

Jacob Fearnley could reach the "very top of the game" following his eye-catching straight-sets victory over Nick Kyrgios, according to fellow Brit Cam Norrie. Fearnley has enjoyed a remarkable rise into the ATP top 100, jumping over 500 ranking spots while dominating the challenger circuit, and he now has the chance to form a run in just his second Grand Slam appearance.

Cameron Norrie backed Jacob Fearnley to make it to the "very top of the game", following the rising star's stunning Australian Open first-round victory over Nick Kyrgios.

It took two hours and 20 minutes for Fearnley to dispatch the injury-hit Australian, triumphing in two tie-breaks to set up a second-round tie against Arthur Cazaux – for a likely third-round meeting with Alexander Zverev.

And Norrie was full of praise for his Great Britain team-mate, hailing Fearnley's composure throughout the match, and he feels it is "just the beginning" for the young Scot.

"Yeah, I've been really impressed with Jacob and his progression up the ranks," Norrie said after crashing out in Melbourne to Matteo Berrettini.

"Watching him last night, it was some good viewing in bed watching him against Kyrgios. He stayed very calm throughout the whole match. It's impressive.

"I think he has a very complete game. I don't see any reason why he can't be at the very top of the game.

"I know it's still early doors for him, but I really love the way he works day in, day out. He deserves all the wins and success that he's had. I think it's just the beginning for him."

Fearley received his first call-up to Great Britain's Davis Cup squad as they take on Japan at the end of January, and Norrie was pleased to see the 23-year-old in the team.

Having both studied at TCU in Fort Worth, Norrie feels he and Fearnley will both relish the team environment.

"I think he loves the team atmosphere," Norrie said. "Obviously, we went to the same school at TCU. We both like the team atmosphere.

"I think it's a great addition to the team. Yeah, hopefully he can progress throughout this tournament. I think he has a good chance to go through.

"Some new experiences for him. It will be great to have him in the team. I'm excited for him."

Norrie's first-round exit made him the second Brit to exit the Melbourne Slam, after Sonay Kartal was downed in straight sets on Sunday.
