Iga Swiatek beats Anna Karolina Schmiedlova to clinch bronze medal - Olympic women's singles bronze medal match - recap

Iga Swiatek beat Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in straight sets and clinched the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The world number one came back swinging from a shock semi-final defeat and dominated the bronze medal match to end her Olympic campaign on a high.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - SWIATEK 6-2 6-1 SCHMIEDLOVA
After a slightly shaky start, Iga Swiatek got well into the game and proved why she is the world number one with brave, composed play. Anna Karolina Schmiedlova tried everything but in the end couldn't match her opponent.
The bronze medal goes to Swiatek who brings her Olympic campaign to a consolidating end.
SWIATEK 6-2 6-1 SCHMIEDLOVA
Ace to start the game - Swiatek is looking excellent on her first serve today! Two break points for her and she makes it as Schmiedlova can't answer her serve.
SWIATEK 6-2 5-1 SCHMIEDLOVA
Swiatek is asking too much off her opponent now and Schmiedlova just can't answer. Double break point through a double fault and Swiatek makes it the first time with a backhand winner.
She's one game away from the medal!
SWIATEK 6-2 4-1 SCHMIEDLOVA
It's all going in Swiatek's favour now, also aided by an increasing amount of errors from Schmiedlove. She has a double game point and brings it home with another forehand error from Schmiedlova.
Swiatek has one hand on the medal now.

Swiatek is well in control now. She achieves a break point and makes it at the first time of asking by forcing her opponent to a forehand error.

Schmiedlova doesn't make it easy for Swiatek and counters a lot the world number one throws at her. Still, Swiatek achieves a game point and gets it through a backhand long line error from Schmiedlova.

Great game from Schmiedlova who paitently waits for opportunities and makes them when they come along. She brings her serve home at the net.

'Come on!,' Swiatek shouts. She's immaculate on serve and takes the game straight with a forehand winner. She's playing with a lot of pace and urgency now.

Better from Schmiedlova who does well to pick out spaces to play into and looks good on her forehand. She allows Swiatek back into the game with two successive double faults though and Swaitek achieves the set point. Schmiedlova defends with a strong serve, Swiatek regains the advantage but gives it away.
Once more, advantage Swiatek and this time she brings it home - backhand miss from Schmiedlova - and that's the first set in her bag.

Another straight serve from Swiatek - she is flying now and only one game away from winning the first set.

Fairly level game, but Swiatek is the braver player - she achieves a break point through a backhand long line and takes it through a forehand miss from Schmiedlova.
After losing the early break, Swiatek looks to have refocused.

No drama on the serve for Swiatek this time and she takes the game straight.

Swiatek response and she does so in style with a lot of pressure from the base line and a lot of risk. Double break point and she makes it through a strong return and a subsequent backhand miss from Schmiedlove - re-break!

Schmiedlova covers ground effortlessly and Swiatek is uncharacteristically error-prone, especially on the forehand. It's a backhand error though that earns Schmiedlova a first break point and she gets it with a forehand miss from Swiatek.

Great first serves from Schmiedlova that force Swiatek into two errors. However, Swiatek keeps making Schmiedlova work for it and has the upper hand in the long rallies - one point achieved through a sensational jump and slammed volley. Still, Schmiedlove achieves a game point and makes it with a two-handed long line that Swiatek fires out.
SWIATEK 1-0 SCHMIEDLOVA
Long rallies to start the game and Swiatek is the sharper one - her forehand is looking way better than yesterday. She forces Schmiedlova to a lot of movement on the base line and achieves a double break point. She gives away the first with an error on an attempted volley - Schmiedlova sliding well at the net - but makes it at the second time of asking through a great first serve.
