Team GB pair Katie Boulter and Heather Watson have been eliminated from the women's doubles competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The error-strewn British duo were beaten in straight sets in the quarter-final by third-seed Italian pair Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani on Thursday, losing 6-3 6-1 in just over an hour on Court Simonne-Mathieu.
In the searing Parisian heat, Paolini and Errani gained the first break at the first time of asking in the opening set to build an early 2-0 lead, as Boulter hit two double-faults on her serve.
Team GB hit back with a break of their own, but fell two games behind again as the Italians struck back in an electric start to the match.
Boulter, who turned 28 on Thursday, and Watson managed to defend their serve for the remainder of the opening set, but the damage was already done as Italy took the lead.
Another Boulter double fault led to a double break at the beginning of the second set which gave Paolini and Errani - two French Open runners-up at Roland-Garros, in singles and doubles respectively - a commanding lead as they put one foot in the semi-finals.

The Brits battled back again, claiming their second break of the match, but were undone instantly once more as the Italians moved 5-1 ahead.
Serving to stay in the match and to keep their dreams of a medal alive, GB lost their serve for a sixth time in two sets, which confirmed Paolini and Errani’s spot in the last four.
Elsewhere in the women’s doubles, Taiwanese pair Tsao Chia-yi and Hsieh Su-wei were beaten by Czech Republic duo Linda Noskova and last year’s Roland-Garros finalist Karolina Muchova, who will face the Italians next.
Spanish pair Cristina Buca and Sara Sorribes Tormo earned a match tie-break win over Lyudmyla and Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine.
They will face Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaier for a place in the final after their two-set win over Czech duo Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
