Katie Boulter delighted to get ‘one in the bag’ for new coach after beating Tamara Korpatsch in Ostrava Open final - ‘That was my present’

Katie Boulter claimed a confidence-boosting piece of silverware at the Ostrava Open after coming from a set down to defeat Tamara Korpatsch. It was the first trophy Boulter has won under new coach Michael Joyce, as the former British No. 1 aims to recover from a very frustrating year in 2025. Boulter reflected on those tough times during her victory speech in Czechia.

Katie Boulter was delighted to get "one in the bag" after winning a first trophy under her new coach at the Ostrava Open.

Boulter claimed the fourth title of her career by recovering from a set down to beat Tamara Korpatsch 5-7 6-2 6-1, which comes just over a month since linking up with Maria Sharapova’s former coach Michael Joyce.

She had performed inconsistently throughout the 2025 season, contributing to a split with former long-time coach Biljana Veselinovic.

This was a much-needed morale booster for the former British No. 1 after her first-round exit to Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open, where she was only spared from competing in qualifying due to a late withdrawal.

This victory also ensures Boulter will move back up into the WTA top 100, after falling out of those positions last November.

The win came six days after Joyce’s 53rd birthday and Boulter jovially said that this counts as a belated birthday present to her new coach.

She said in the on-court trophy presentation: "We're only a few weeks into business right now Mickey, but we've got one in the bag, and it was on your birthday week. So, not a bad week for you at 53 years old. That was my present to you.

"Everyone close to me knows how hard this last year has been for me. Today makes it all worth it. I appreciate the work you do on a daily basis, and it means everything to me. So, thank you."

The 29-year-old’s victory followed on from Emma Raducanu’s straight-sets defeat to Sorana Cirstea at the Transylvania Open final, as they became the first Brits to reach two different WTA singles finals in the same week.

Boulter was made to sweat in a tense opener, with neither player showing any chinks in their service armour until the Brit took the first break of serve to move 5-4 ahead.

However, Korpatsch broke back immediately on route to taking the next three games and moving a set ahead in the match.

That was as good as it got for the 30-year-old though, as Boulter found a higher level.

The second set was much more of a formality, with the Brit taking an early break to move 2-1 in front. She broke again to make it 5-2 before sealing the set on her own serve.

The final set was even more straightforward as Boulter set her stall out by immediately breaking Korpatsch in the first game before doing so twice more to secure a second title on a hard court after winning in San Diego two years ago.

Her other two titles both came on grass, winning successive tournaments at Nottingham in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

Meanwhile, Korpatsch remains on one WTA singles title after winning the Transylvania Open two years ago.
