America's Alex Michelsen revealed how preparations for his French Open first-round victory were wrecked by a disruptive night's sleep.

Michelsen beat Alexander Shevchenko in swift fashion on Monday - wrapping up 6-2 6-4 6-2 victory in a little over 90 minutes.

But speaking to John and Patrick McEnroe on TNT Sports US after the game, the 21-year-old revealed how he was forced into a late-night change of hotel rooms on the night prior, owing to a leak he discovered shortly before midnight.

"Yeah, I got dominated last night," Michelsen said. "There was a little leak in the air conditioning, and one of the panels was filling up with water.

"I went and touched it, and water was everywhere. I have a video on my phone. This is at 23:55, I was in bed, but wasn’t asleep.

"I got the WHOOP [fitness wearable] on, so they know how much I’m sleeping. So they’re like, ‘ah you didn’t get to bed till late’, and now I have proof.

"I had to deal with that. Unfortunately, it was like four trips between the second and fourth floor. It was a grind.

"I was already having trouble sleeping, and then started hearing the dripping noise. I thought, 'maybe it’s coming from the shower, and then I see it coming from the ceiling, and I’m like, ‘oh boy!’."

Given Michelsen was involved in the first matches of the morning, he did not let his poor preparations show on the court.

He came flying out of the blocks to dispatch a decisive double-break in the opening set, not conceding a single break point of his own.

While the second began in a more erratic fashion, Michelsen found the advantage with his third break - his second of which to love - and held on to close out for a 2-0 lead, before clinically dispatching the third for a straightforward morning's work.

Michelsen is among the crop of promising young Americans breaking onto the scene and making big impressions at Grand Slams.

He will face compatriot Nishesh Basavareddy in the second round, with the pair having come through at the same time at junior level. Basavareddy claimed a landmark victory over No. 7 seed and another fellow American, Taylor Fritz.

Speaking in his post-match press conference on Monday, Michelsen said their relationship goes back to when they were young children.

"Yeah, it's going to be very interesting," he said. "I actually thought when he was, you know, supposed to play Taylor, I thought that was going to be tough, because he's going to use his hands, and Nishesh has very good hands.

"He's a good competitor. We played our first match together when we were probably eight or nine. So, you know, it's pretty funny we're getting to play here at a Grand Slam.

"But, yeah, it's going to be a tricky match. He's a very, very good player, and I'm expecting it to be a very tough match."
