Mirra Andreeva storms into the semi-finals of the 2026 French Open with a convincing win over Sorana Cirstea on Court Philippe-Chatrier

Andreeva is the sixth-youngest player in the Open Era to reach her second career Women’s Singles semi-final at Roland Garros in the Open Era.

Mirra Andreeva powers into her second French Open semi-final courtesy of a statement performance against a previously in-form Sorana Cirstea.

The Russian ensures the 36-year-old Romanian’s first appearance in the last eight at Roland-Garros since 2009 is a painful one as she moves 2-0 up in their head-to-head.

The 19-year-old was too good in all departments as she broke again to 15 to seal a 56-minute victory on her first match point thanks to a belting forehand down the line.

The eighth seed will now face Elina Svitolina or Martak Kostyuk in the last four.

This time Andreeva consolidates with a hold to love and the 19-year-old is just one game away from the last four.

Andreeva quickly glosses over the blip and stands imperious at the net, swatting away a couple of volleys to pose a threat at 15-30.

Cirstea is perhaps frustrated by her inability to hit through the Russian and thrashes a wayward forehand wide to offer up two more break points.

The Romanian caves on the first as she zaps a rapid return straight into the net.

It’s a first blot on Mirra’s almost flawless copybook so far today – and it proves costly!

The Russian lulls for the first time and needs to play catch-up from 0-30.

A miscued forehand wide gifts the Romanian two break points and she is able to convert on the second when the eighth seed bashes a mid-court forehand into the net.

‘A geometry lesson,’ exclaims the legendary Chris Evert on TNT Sports comms as Andreeva breaks to 15.

It follows a world-class return game from the teenager as she follows up an exquisite half volley ‘off her shoelaces’ by concluding a pair of dominant rallies with crunching winners down each flank.

It’s a new set and a different story now.

Cirstea is far more proactive as she adds extra venom to her groundstrokes to make more dents in the Andreeva defence and keeps her nose in front with a slick drive volley to close-out a hold to 30.

Andreeva quickly sets about re-establishing her dominance and powers into a 40-0 lead.

However, Cirstea is showing greater resistance now and after counter punching a wonderful crosscourt winner, she makes her opponent continually play extra balls to lure a pair of errors and make deuce.

Mirra resets brilliantly and follows a clinical one-two punch with an ace to finish.

Johanna Konta: "I am still of the opinion that if Cirstea is able to dictate, she can bother Andreeva. But what we are seeing, she is unable to dictate.
"We're seeing the heavier conditions, Cirstea's ball isn't able to come through as quickly. Andreeva is an incredible retriever, she's able to make points go long.
"Cirstea is getting frustrated and towards the end of that first set she started missing balls, I think, because she knows she isn't being effective."

Tim Henman: "She's been so good at going down the line, every time she's able to step inside the baseline, she's going line and dictating play. Cirstea has got to try and be much more effective and push Andreeva back, because if she doesn't, this could be over pretty rapidly."

The Romanian zaps a brilliant forehand winner down the line to edge ahead from 30-30 and then walks to her chair with renewed belief when Mirra sizzles a backhand just long.  

Andreeva slides forward into the forecourt to produce a majestic drop shot and then drills probing strikes down each wing to conjure up two set points.

The Russian slams down a massive first serve to seal the deal and gobbles a morning bagel in just 22 minutes.

Andreeva is absolutely flying so far today.

The Russian is rock solid in the rallies, confidently turning them her way with great depth and power regardless of what Cirstea throws at her.

The Romanian is pressed wide to her right and can only steer a forehand into the net before watching on in dismay as the eighth seed sizzles an inside-in return winner up that same flank.

It secures a pair of break points for Andreeva and she converts on the first when the 18th seed fails to deal with a high bounce at her baseline.

Andreeva pounces upon a short ball off the net cord to punch through Sorana’s defence with a rasping crosscourt backhand.

The teenager follows it with a magnificent crosscourt pass to bypass Cirstea’s advance to the net and completes a hold to 15 with a pair of aces.

That is supreme defence!

Andreeva claws back some probing, deep strikes to her forehand wing and manages to counter punch an awkward high pass that Sorana can only angle into the net on the volley.

It tees up two more break points for the Russian and she converts on the first with a crushing crosscourt forehand return.

Andreeva’s concentration dips at 30-0 with a poor drop-shot attempt and a loose backhand, but she regains the ascendancy with a crisp forehand winner.

The Russian extends her workload with a mid-court backhand long but then survives Cirstea’s drop shot into the net at deuce that would have caught her way beyond her baseline.

The eighth seed then lands a hefty serve to consolidate via a long and winding road.

Cirstea feathers a lovely dropper to lead 30-15 but Mirra reels her in to press and force a forehand miscue to snare an instant break point.

The teenager makes it count too as a scorcher of a forehand gets her off to a flyer.

The 19-year-old Russian claimed a place in her third RG quarter-final on the spin with a 6-3 6-2 triumph over Jil Teichmann 6-3 6-2.

The eighth seed is targeting a second semi-final in Paris having reached that stage back in 2024.
