With defending champion Carlos Alcaraz injured, and both Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic eliminated, Zverev is the highest-ranked player left in the draw.
The German, long tipped for Grand Slam success, faces Czech 26th seed Jakub Mensik for a place in Sunday’s final.
Zverev will start as favourite despite Mensik’s impressive straight-sets dismantling of Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in Tuesday night’s quarter-final.
Indeed, the pressure rests squarely on the second seed. Zverev has lost seven Grand Slam semi-finals and three finals, including the 2024 French Open final against Alcaraz, a match in which he at one point led by two sets to one.
The other semi-final is an all-Italian affair, with 10th seed Flavio Cobolli taking on Matteo Arnaldi.

Cobolli defeated Canadian fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets to reach his first major semi-final, while Arnaldi advanced when compatriot Matteo Berrettini retired from their quarter-final injured.
Cobolli and Zverev are the only top-10 seeds remaining in the men’s draw and, despite the early exit of overwhelming favourite Sinner and the absence of the injured Lorenzo Musetti, Italy is guaranteed a finalist.
