'I don't care any more' - Iga Swiatek says she is ignoring results after shock Alexandra Eala defeat at Wimbledon

Former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek said that "I don't care any more about the results" as she searches to rediscover her best form on court. The Polish player has been struggling for months, and lost in straight sets to Alexandra Eala on Saturday in the third round at Wimbledon.

Watched on by a packed Royal Box that included Manchester City star Phil Foden, Swiatek saved a series of set points in the opening stanza, having trailed 5-3 before taking it to a tie-break that eventually ended with Eala prevailing 11-9.

That set lasted 84 minutes - 27 more than Swiatek's entire length of her double-bagel win in last year's final. But the gruelling opener appeared to take a heavy toll on the Pole as Eala swiftly raced into a 4-0 lead during the second.

Swiatek stymied the flow, holding serve in the fifth game before retrieving one of the breaks, and Eala displayed some signs of nerves when closing the match out. The rising Filipino star, seeded No. 29, was gifted one match point when Swiatek mishit a simple forehand, sending it too long, and after being unable to take that, she also spurned a second opportunity.

But she produced a clinical backhand with her third attempt and was in tears when celebrating her triumph.

While Eala was understandably emotional after her victory at SW19, Swiatek was more coldly analytical in her post-match press conference.

She reflected: ”Yeah, for sure it was, as you said, a tough match. I felt like Alexandra was more brave in important moments. In the tie-break, we both had many chances to close the set earlier, and it didn't go my way.

”But overall, I feel like I played better than I played in Bad Homburg anyway. So yeah, just got to move forward.”

Swiatek added that she was more disappointed with her efforts in returning serves from her opponent - which she picked out as challengingly slow - than she was with the defeat.

”I think it was tougher mentally for me to accept these missed returns from the slow serves,” she answered.

”I got to say it's much tougher to return a serve like that than a normal serve.

"I know it was slow. I know exactly how it's going to come to me. It's such a different rhythm than what I usually have a chance to return.

"That, for me, was hard to accept, yeah."

After a few difficult months for the Polish player, Swiatek said that she was focused only on the process of getting back to her best.

She said that she no longer cared about the results, such was her focus.

”You need to trust the process, for sure," Swiatek said. "Honestly, I don't care any more about the results. I've been so focused on them that it's hard to continue like that. So I'm really trying to, like, let it go.

”I don't have good results, so I'm not going to expect for myself good results because they're just not happening. I'm not on that level yet.”

Eala will next play on Monday, when she faces Jasmie Paolini in their round-of-16 clash.
