Mirra Andreeva became the youngest-ever winner of a WTA 1000 event with her Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships victory. The 17-year-old beat Denmark’s Clara Tauson in straight sets in the final to move into the world’s top 10 for the first time. But where does she rank on the list of youngest WTA winners, and is she a contender for the French Open at Roland-Garros in May?

Mirra Andreeva continued the impressive start to her career with a 7-6(1) 6-1 victory over Clara Tauson in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

At just 17 years and 299 days old, she is now the youngest-ever winner of a WTA 1000 event and became the first teenager to ascend into the top 10 of the world rankings since Nicole Vaidisova achieved the feat in 2007.

To make the triumph all the more impressive, Andreeva beat Grand Slam champions Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina en route to the landmark title.

Denmark’s Tauson, also competing in her first WTA 1000 final, beat Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai and made a fast start to the final, breaking Andreeva in the second game of the match for a 2-0 lead.

She was immediately broken back, however, before Andreeva dominated the first-set tie-break to take a step towards victory.

And the Russian reeled off five games in a row from 1-1 in the second to cap off a superb week in style.

Among the accolades, the 17-year-old joins Maria Sharapova, Michaella Krajicek, Nicole Vaidisova and Coco Gauff as only the fifth player to win multiple WTA titles before turning 18.

But where does she rank on the list of youngest WTA winners? And is she a contender for the upcoming French Open at Roland-Garros, all live on discovery+?

Where does Andreeva rank among youngest WTA winners?

As mentioned, Andreeva is now the youngest player in history to clinch a WTA 1000 title. That was her second tour-level triumph following her victory in the 2024 Iasi Open.

However, there have been younger WTA champions.

In fact, Andreeva’s win in Romania last year places her ninth on the all-time list of first-time winners.

At 14 years and six months old when she won the 1990 Puerto Rico Open, Jennifer Capriati is the youngest to ever lift a WTA title, while Coco Gauff is seventh on the list with her win at the 2019 Linz Open when she was 15.

Andreeva’s French Open credentials

Andreeva is set to move up to ninth in the world rankings, so should she maintain her form, it goes without saying she will be among the top seeds at Roland-Garros as the next major looms on the calendar.

But is she a realistic contender to clinch a first Grand Slam on the famous Parisian clay? And what is her record at the tournament?

Having become the youngest player to reach a major semi-final in the French capital last year, it would certainly be foolish to write her off. Even more so when you consider her Iasi Open win came on clay.

Andreeva beat 19th-seed Victoria Azarenka and second-seed Sabalenka during her 2024 run to the French Open last four, eventually losing out to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.

Her record at the French Open reads seven wins and two losses from two appearances for a win percentage of 78%, her highest across the sport’s four showpiece events.

The teenager’s game and spectacular movement, in particular, is clearly suited to the slower surface.

While Swiatek will open as the favourite to claim a fifth crown and fourth in a row, Andreeva is among the realistic contenders.
