'It is going to be emergency fuel only' - Full-circuit yellow turns race on its head at 24 Hours of Le Mans 2026

However, there was even more drama as we entered the final four hours of the iconic endurance race on Sunday, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max, with the battle for first place in the Hypercar and LMGT3 categories sparking into life following a game-changing full-circuit yellow.

Officials were forced to bring the full-circuit yellow into effect after a malfunction with Ian James, Mattia Drudi and Zacharie Robichon’s No. 27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin, meaning that drivers would not be allowed to enter the pit lane.

The TNT Sports commentary team were stunned to see one of the shining lights in the LMGT3 category suffer such a shocking setback.

"Drama for one of the key contenders, we have just been told that one of the No. 27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin has stopped at the side of the racetrack," said one member of the TNT Sports commentary team.

"We have got yellows on the exit of the second chicane. No indication as to what has happened, it is some sort of technical issue, I am being told.”

"It just dies, that was the second-place car of Zacharie Robichon that was running very well in LMGT3, so Heart of Racing are down to one car now."

That was not just bad news for the Heart of Racing team, though, as it also impacted the Hypercar category.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and Nyck de Vries in the No. 7 Toyota Racing as well as Louis Deletraz, Will Stevens and Norman Nato of the No. 12 Cadillac Hertz Team Jota were leading the way in first and second place, respectively, but they were also in desperate need of fuel.

That meant that they were forced to make emergency stops in a desperate attempt to get something in their tanks.

”That’s now going to hurt this case,” said one member of the TNT Sports commentary team.

”He is going to have to box his lap, and it is going to be emergency fuel only.”

However, a driver’s emergency fuel stop only gives them enough for one lap during a full-circuit yellow, meaning it was only a temporary fix.

To make matters worse, the course went green while the No. 7 Toyota and No. 12 Cadillac were refuelling, handing the No. 20 BMW M Team WRT and the No. 8 Toyota Racing cars in third and fourth an even better chance to close the gap between themselves and their rivals.

The TNT Sports commentators agreed that the moment of chaos had turned the race on its head.

"So Nyck de Vries is potentially on the back foot now," said one member of the TNT Sports commentary team.

"Does the Cadillac need fuel as well, or can it go for a little bit?

"So it falls even further into place for Brendon Hartley.

"Will that then put the BMW in a strong position?

"Fifteen minutes ago, we thought Toyota had this all wrapped up."
