England level series with deserved win in second ODI

Sri Lanka were comfortably beaten by five wickets against England as they leveled the series at 1-1 with the tourists playing better with the bat and ball.

The hosts won the toss again and chose to bat first - just like they did in the first ODI - but produced a smaller target of 220 after being bowled out with three balls left in their innings.

England’s response with the bat was impressive as they played sensible cricket to meet the low run rate that was required with Will Jacks hitting the winning runs.

Reman Ahmed was a surprise opener for England after Zak Crawley had to withdraw through injury, but he settled fast and better than his partner Ben Duckett.

While Duckett took some wild swipes at the ball, Ahmed was getting off strike quickly and with relative ease but it all ended after Dhananjaya’s wicked delivery moved on him as he stepped back to hit his wickets.

His 13 runs meant Joe Root entered with England 18/1 but the tenured batsman quickly settled into his rhythm scoring four of his first ball.

In fact, Root’s composure allowed Duckett to find his own momentum and the pair built a good partnership before Duckett was bowled by Vandersay, leaving England 89/2.

Sri Lanka targeted Jacob Bethell - the new man at the crease - and after a short battle, they made their breakthrough dismissing him for six after Asalanka caught from close range off Dhananjaya.

With England at 97/3, in came captain Harry Brook who had something to prove after scoring six himself in the first ODI off the back of a poor Ashes campaign.

What followed was one of the most sensible and mature batting performances from England in some time as Root and Brook dug in and protected their wickets while building a match-winning partnership.

The pair steered England to 178/3 before Root was trapped LBW by Fernando bringing Root’s innings to an end at 75.

With England needing 38 runs from the final 54 balls, Jos Buttler joined Brook at the crease but the captain fell just two overs later after Vandersay caught him out LBW for 42.

Just as the hosts began to get a glimmer of hope, Buttler quickly took it away from them.

England needed a run rate of 4.40 to win at the start of their innings and for most of it, they settled for singles or twos until Buttler got involved.

Some quick fire boundaries, including one six, suddenly had England needing three runs to win at the start of the 47th over.

Jacks, who didn’t have the best bowling and fielding display of his career - dropping a sitter - hit the winning runs which saw England tie the series at 1-1.

England will seek to complete the comeback when they take on Sri Lanka in the third and final game of the ODI series on Tuesday which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Brook: Worst pitch I've played on

"That was probably the worst pitch I have ever played on so you just had to adapt as quick as possible and try to get off strike.

"I thought the bowlers did an amazing job to bowl Sri Lanka out, a side used to these conditions."

On Root's performance: "Root's ability to get off strike and put the bad ball away is awesome. He is a phenomenal player to have in our side."

Asalanka: It was hard to push for runs in heat

"We were at least 30 runs short so there are a few areas we need to improve. Sometimes it is hard to push for twos with this heat and we need to save energy so I didn't notice [a lack of intent].

"England batted well in the middle period. We tried everything."

Root: We learned from our mistakes

"I love coming to Sri Lanka. I always feel extremely welcome and enjoy playing here so it was nice to get a win on a difficult surface.

"I don't think it was a great wicket for ODI cricket, to be brutally honest, but we found a way and learned from our mistakes with bat and ball from the first game. I tried to take the ball as late as possible.

"I have played a lot of cricket in the subcontinent and used my experience. I understand the different nature of the bounce and how it turns but you have to be precise with your footwork early on."

Player of the match

Joe Root was the man of the moment for England today with the bat and the ball. His two wickets in two balls brought Sri Lanka's innings to an early end and prevented them from some late runs.

He then took to the crease with the bat and showed why he has the reputation he does. After Ahmed fell relatively early, he brought a presence and calmness to the crease which also helped Duckett settle in.

Depsite, Duckett and Bethell being dismissed, Root dug in and protected his wicket to build a new partnership with Brook that anchored the England innings.

An impressive 75 was the highest score of the day and he deservedly wins player of the match.

Jacks punches away the winning shot and England level the series 1-1!

England need 3 runs from 24 balls to win.

Buttler is looking to put this one to bed and fast. He is routinely going to the air as he punches shots down the ground and runs for two.

Six runs in the first five balls is capped off with a huge six from Buttler to end the over. Rathnayake will not want to look back on that over.

England need 15 runs from 30 balls to win.

Buttler goes aerial again and it races through the leg-side to the boundary. His expertise is dragging England to victory now.

After a single from Buttler, the hosts want LBW against Jacks but the umpire is motionless.

Two heart-in-mouth moments from England as Buttler goes to the air but he manages to beat the fielders on both occasions to claim two fours for his side.

Well, England take five runs from the over despite losing Brook. In comes Jacks who didn't have the best time with the ball in hand earlier.

England are still in the drivers seat but they need to remain composed.

A HUGE breakthrough for Sri Lanka just as it seemed Brook would deliver a massive response to lead his side to a crucial win.

He goes for a sweep shot and horribly mistimes it and it is plum.

No review, he walks and this is getting tasty once more.

Buttler is just about as seasoned of an ODI player as you can get and he has started well. Four more runs from the over keeps England firmly in the driving seat despite the slight uncertainty that followed Root's dismissal.

Jos Buttler comes to the crease to replace Root - Brook looked visibly upset on replays watching the third umpire give his decision.

Buttler gets a single away just about on his first ball with three runs tagged on from the final two balls.

The on-field decision stands and it is mighty close but this is why the umpire's decision is so key.

Ball-tracking gives it as umpire's call so Root has to walk. Another mega innings from him but this just gives Sri Lanka hope.

Some good running from Root and Brook after the former hammered a shot down the leg-side.

Into the final ten overs of today's action and England look in total control as Brook goes to the air with the ball falling safely near long-off but is cut off before the rope.

Brook's 38 off 69 balls has shown he can play maturely and comes at a great time to quieten some critics.

England need 48 runs from 66 balls to win.

Wellalage is back into the bowling attack so whatever knock he took has seemingly worn off.

He conceeds a single and then gets hit for four by Root off a delivery that is also deemed a wide - five runs please.

Four dot balls to start the over as Brook goes for a scoop shot but he gets nowhere near it - similar to Duckett's attempt earlier on.

Brook then drops his bat to the ground in frustration as Fernando's delivery is fairly wide but it doesn't get awarded as one.

In response he hammers a shot down the ground for a single.

Sri Lanka at this stage were 157/5, so England sit ahead of where the hosts were at with more wickets in hand.

In comes in handy to bat second in these occasions as it has allowed for sensible, cool heads as England look set to potter to leveling the series.

Four runs come from the over.

England need 61 runs from 84 balls to win.

Another five runs from the over for England as Wellalage goes off the field with an apparent injury to make matters worse.

This England win feels inevitable at this point but the home fans continue to dance and sing as they have all day long.

Nudge, nudge, nudge. England are making this look easy but as they rightly should. Four singles from the over and the only thing that can stop England now, is England.

A self-destruction is probably what Sri Lanka are holding onto at this point.

England need 70 runs from 96 balls to level the series.

Asalanka starts his over with some good deliveries including a slower one that makes Root swing and miss.

The Sri Lanka captain looks like the most determined man in the stadium to win this game but it's not happening.

England manage two singles from the over.

A great stop from Asalanka at slip as Brook connects well with a reverse sweep shot - Premier League goalkeepers would be proud of a stop like that.

Just two runs off the over.

And that is brilliant from Brook, he marches down his crease to meet Dhananjaya's first delivery of the over which he cover drives throught the off-side for four.

49-run partnership between Root and Brook. A mature display from Brook after two quick dismals for Duckett and Bethell.

It's exactly what they needed from their captain.

England require 80 runs from 120 balls to win.

Vandersay finally finds some spin in the pitch and delivers a peach of a delivery which almost catches out Brook.

Just one off the over, England do need to keep their wits about them as we head towards the climax in Colombo.

This is potentially the most sensible batting display from England in quite some time. Root and Brook know - as two of the leaders in the team - this win would mean a lot, especially with England's qualification for the ODI World Cup at stake.

Five more singles for the tourists.

England need 85 runs from 21 overs to win

Root and Brook are just pushing the ball around and taking singles if they can. They are in no rush and know this will win them the game.

This should be a straight forward win, right?

Vandersay struggled to get any sort of spin going in his over and it results in an easy over for England and an expensive one too.

Five singles for the tourists as they picked their shots with ease concludes with two off the final bowl.

England need 96 runs from 23 overs to win

Three singles off the 27th over as England keep ticking over. England were 129/1 at this stage in the first ODI while Sri Lanka were 105/3 after 27 overs earlier today.

The Sri Lankans were targeting Bethell with a plan to disrupt Root's momentum and they struck early.

'ROOOTTT!' Even in Sri Lanka you can hear the cries from the barmy army as Root claims his 45th career ODI half-century - Mr Reliable.

He's got to that total of just 52 balls and it would've been quicker if Duckett or Bethell hadn't been dismissed. He's played smartly when he has needed to and it's helped Brook settle.

Brook shows this as he cuts across a delivery to past gully which races away for four.

Both batsmen are digging in a bit at the minute, protecting their wicket. They both know there are plenty of overs left to score the required 108 runs.

Root rejects a single which further highlights this stance but gets one to end the over.

Wellalage takes charge from the opposite end and it starts with three dot balls as Brook defends hard.

But the fourth delivery nearly spells disaster and Brook edges the ball and almost drags it onto his stumps but fortunately his foot takes the blow instead.

Brook does well to get a single off the first ball from Vandersay before Root crashes away a good shot for four.

Root then manages to hook a shot into the leg-side off a sloppy delivery to get a couple more runs.

Wellalage has been expensive so far today but is back for a fourth over, where a much better return limits England to two singles.

Brook is showing some good resilience to stay at his crease today, he can't give his wicket away cheaply.

England have plenty of the overs and the batting at their disposal, plus are ahead of the required run rate.

A cagey start to Vandersay's over with three dot balls but Root eventually sweeps one deep on the leg-side but it's only a single - Brook ends up on strike.

He can only manage two dots. Just the one run from the over, England need to stay strong here.

Brook - who was in the headlines for the wrong reasons after the Ashes and was sub-par in the first ODI - needs a big response here.

He gets the first ball away for one but it wasn't an assured shot as it clunks off his pad.

Some poor fielding from Sri Lanka helps England bring up a ton.

That is exactly what Sri Lanka wanted. Target the new man in, the man who isn't Root and try and poke holes into this England batting lineup.

Bethell fires a shot straight at Asalanka at cover who takes a good catch.

England need 125 runs from 31 overs

Sri Lanka are desperate to have Bethell on strike, they know this England batting order has a collapse in it.

Remember, Duckett and Root built an even better partnership in the first ODI and that wasn't enough to see them over the line due to the rest of the order batting poorly.

Dhananjaya looks interested when a ball comes off Bethell's pads before landing safely, with the only run from the over coming with a Bethell single off the last delivery.

Can Sri Lanka wrestle back a foothold in this?

Vandersay enters the hosts' bowling attack but he gets hit for four off his first ball by Root.

Bethell enters with a one ball left and pushes a shot away for a single.

A huge breakthrough for Sri Lanka as it looked like England would ease to victory in Colombo.

Vandersay's spin catches out Duckett and spins back into his wicket similarly to how Ahmed was dismissed.

Mendis goes for a stumping on Duckett - which almost resembled a slam dunk in basketball - but the batter is clever and keeps his foot in his crease.

It's time for drinks, with England in a good position. England need 137 more runs from 34 overs.

If you wanted to see a sign that Duckett has settled into his rhythm now, he just played a lovely bridge shot over his shoulder.

This partnership is now up to 59 as Duckett pushes a shot that hangs in the air for a moment but drops to safety.

This is turning into a batting clinic from Root and Duckett as they add another four runs to the overall total - exactly as they need to do.

Asalanka tries to change his approach but Root is savvy to it and changes his angle to push the ball away for a single.

A sort-of dream over for England against Wellalago and exactly what Brook called for ahead of this game.

A single from each ball of the over keep strike rotating and comfortably beats the required run rate England need.

Captain Asalanka enters the bowling attack which slows down England's chase. Three singles from the over but it keeps the scoreboard ticking over.

Two super shots from Duckett who has got himself going nicely since his chaotic start. He sends both shots to the boundary for four - something Sri Lanka struggled to do in their innings - and it's giving England a faster start than the hosts.

Five off the final over of the powerplay for England. No big hits or boundaries this time but they only need a run rate of 4.40 to catch Sri Lanka's target.

Sri Lanka were on 36/1 after the end of the powerplay.

Some really good running from the Englishman to get two runs off a shot that Sri Lanka were taking singles from.

Root then sweeps a great shot to fine leg which races away for four. They survived the scares and that is a good over for the tourists.

Original decision is not out. They got two of the first reds they needed but ball-tracking shows it was missing the wickets. Sri Lanka lose their review.

A bit of an edgy over ends fantastically for England. Duckett rocks back on to his back foot and unleashes a powerful high shot that bounces the right side of the boundary.

Just the second six we've had all day and a big confidence booster for Duckett.

Another four for Root who is showing his class quickly here. He follows it up with two more.

Fernando responds with a wicked delivery that rises fast as Root takes a swing at it. The Sri Lankan's reaction says it all - they know they need to get Root's wicket fast.

Two dot balls round out the over.

England 25/1 (Root 5, Duckett 6)

Ahmed was batting very maturely. I wouldn't call his display aggressive however, as he pawned away the second ball for a single.

Just as Root was preparing to face his first ball, the stumps started to flash so we have a brief pause for that.

On take-two, Root pushes the ball down the field which escapes for four.

England were 25/1 after six overs in the first ODI as well.

The stand-in opener took a step back but was caught out by the in-swing as the ball crashes into his stumps.

He will be annoyed because he started well.

England 18/0 (Ahmed 12, Duckett 5)

England get their first boundary through some unfortunate fielding. Ahmed drives a shot at mid-off who fields well throwing for the far end stumps.

But the ball hits the stumps and bounces off, wrong-footing the fielders the other side as the ball races to the boundary.

Ahmed adds a single and that's the first five overs completed.

Ahmed has settled very well here - certainly better than Duckett has. He drives another shot through the off-side to get two runs and follows up with a single to deep square leg.

Duckett, seemingly inspired by his partner, plays a good shot to deep backwards point for two more. England starting to play cricket.

Ahmed again gets off strike on the first ball as he takes a single. Duckett eventually gets off the mark with a good shot that warrants three runs.

The pair are starting to find their feet here as Ahmed punches a drive to deep point for a single to end the over.

Ahmed faces the first ball of this over from Pramod and pushes away a good shot into the leg-side.

Duckett is all over the place early on, he moves to the left of his stumps as he attempted to flick the ball over the wicket-keeper but he fails to connect.

If he connected, he was probably going to fire the ball straight into his wicket.

Pramod then bowls a wide down the leg-side. Calls for calm heads in England's camp.

The on-field umpire has given this as out but it is a GREAT review from England as ball tracking shows the ball as missing the wicket.

Fernando delivers to Ahmed who plays a solid defensive shot to begin then follows up by swinging at a wide delivery which goes away for a single - he even let go of the bat with one hand.

Duckett drives a shot into the off-side first which is quickly cut out. He then takes a swipe at the following ball - he wasn't anywhere near it.

Ahmed to open England batting

In case you missed the news from earlier, Zak Crawley misses today's game through injury and it means Reman Ahmed moves up the order to open the batting with Ben Duckett today.

Brook revealed at the coin toss that Ahmed has been instructed to be aggressive. Bazball at its finest you'd imagine.

If it goes pear-shaped, you imagine it would be more pressure on the back of the England boss.

In fact, it was two wickets in two balls for the man known as one of the best batsmen to ever play the game.

Adil Rashid and Jamie Overton the pick of the bowlers while Liam Dawson put in a very healthy stint to keep Sri Lanka to singles. Meanwhile, Joe Root - take a bow.

This is the tale of the Sri Lankan innings, plenty of players got starts but they could've done with any of Nissanka, Mishara or Mendis kicking on. It's comfortably less than the 271 they scored two days ago.

A good over for Ahmed ends in a boundary for the hosts. Wellalage is putting together a very handy total for his side once more as he pounces on a slightly loose delivery.

Oh dear Will Jacks, Wellalage puts the ball in the air but Jacks drops it. Dawson has his head in his hands having just caught one himself the ball before.

That would've been that really but Sri Lanka survive and take three runs from the over.

Jacks had probably his best over last time but he starts this one with Rathnayake smashing him down the ground for four.

It brings the first cheer from the home fans in a while until he ultimately got out.

Rathnayake was beginning to let his hands go with the bat but he wildly fires the ball up into the sky with little control.

Dawson positions himself well and takes an easy catch. A big swing in England's favour now.

Rashid finishes his spell with four runs from the over, he has taken some key wickets today and has limited the Sri Lankan batters to singles.

Wellalage scored an impressive 25 not out in the first ODI which ultimately played a big part in Sri Lanka winning. England will be weary to not let that happen again.

Wellalage gets no bat on it as Jacks' ball hits his pad. The England players let out a big shout for LBW but get nothing.

They go for review but they lose it as the ball was pitching outside leg.

A great over from Rashid and for England, only three runs from it and the key wicket of Asalanka.

Wellalage comes in and instantly gets off the mark but this leaves Sri Lanka's innings in a bit of a pickle. They can't go gung-ho just yet now.

And that is a big wicket for England as Sri Lanka were looking to get swinging and that is what undoes Asalanka.

He drops to one knee and looks to sweep a shot to the boundary but he picks out Duckett at deep mid-wicket who doesn't even have to move to catch it.

A nice shot from Rathnayake as he cuts across the ball to send it to deep backward point for two runs.

Six from the over but they are comfortably behind where they were in the first ODI at this stage, being 197/4 then.

Into the final ten overs of the Sri Lanka innings and Rashid comes back into the attack.

And it's more of the same, singles on singles for Sri Lanka and they seem happy enough to settle for them.

Some tidy shots from both batsmen but nothing that will worry the tourists all that much but they are setting themselves up to go big late on here.

A relatively expensive over from Jacks in the context of the game as he goes for six - five singles and a wide.

He hasn't looked much of a threat today with the ball in hand.

Four! Overton takes his first of the over and it is a full toss that Rathnayake fires away into the leg-side and it races for the rope.

The Englishman responds with three dots before Rathnayake guides the ball to third man for a single.

A lumped shot into the off-side from Asalanka brings another single to end the over.

Jacks back into the bowling attack in another change by Brook and it warrants only two runs.

England have this one in control as it stands with Sri Lanka heading back to the singles after a wild Liyanage display.

A drinks break follows the wicket of Liyanage.

Overton follows Rathnayake backing away to leg but is helped around the corner for four after bowling a tad too short.

You will be remembered Liyanage. A short and impactful innings but England will be delighted for it to end there.

Overton back into the attack and the Sri Lankan hits around the ball which sails out to fine leg where Rashid makes a diving catch.

A short review to make sure he got his hands under the ball and Liyanage has to walk.

150 up for Sri Lanka as they average a run rate of 4.29 with 15 overs to play. Dawson bowled well to keep the Liyanage charge under wraps.

Just three singles from the over but they are only 8 runs behind where they were on Thursday when they went on to reach 271.

Welcome to the party Liyanage! If the previous partnership was playing safe, this one isn't as much.

Liyanage gets nine off his first five balls which included a slightly wild sweep shot to send Ahmed for four.

A big chance for England to break the partnership! A shot that doesn't travel much further than short gives Brook the chance of a run out.

Dhananjaya was nowhere near being in as Brook whistles the ball past the stumps.

Liyanage comes in and immediately fires away a four - how's that for an entrance.

A very good innings from Dhanajaya but a big break through for England.

He tries to drive a full delivery from Dawson but picks out Root at midwicket, who produces a low, smart catch.

Here they go! Root goes short and then full and gets his for four both times. This is a test for Brook as captain, he has led his side to being on top but if he mismanages his bowling attack, Sri Lanka can easily get ahead.

Rashid follows Root but goes for one more run but it keeps Sri Lanka's score down. These two have been at the crease for quite some time now as Mendis' run out feels like an age ago.

ROOOOTTT! England's top batsman takes to bowling for his first over today and he goes for just one run.

A big 20 overs lie ahead, who will get the upper hand? Sri Lanka were 143/4 at this stage in the first ODI.

This is a slow pitch as both batters make good shots but English fielders have been able to track them down before going for the boundary.

Sri Lanka just starting to let their hands go a bit more, the pair have been at the crease for a while and as we head into the 30th over, they know they need to just that.

A 55-ball wait is over! Asalanka drops to one knee and scoops a shot over his shoulder which just about races for four.

Two singles end Bethell's over - a much better one for the hosts.

Sri Lanka continue to edge forward in singles, with just three from the over and the wait for a boundary now extending to 51 deliveries!

Most excting shot in a while comes from Dhananjaya as he lets his hands go with a shot that runs to deep mid wicket - just a single.

Boundaries are few and far between but a steady partnership building.

Some more poor running from the Sri Lankan batters who turn down the chance for two runs.

Former Sri Lanka all-rounder Russel Arnold, speaking on TNT Sports, has been ripping into the two for their lack of running.

He said: "Run them ragged, in conditions like these, you have to tire out the bowling side and put them under pressure."

Four more singles in this over and that's halfway in the Sri Lankan innings. For all of those who love context, Sri Lanka were 111/3 at this stage two days ago.

Dhananjaya plays a shot to deep - and they could get two runs - but the pair jog to each other's end. A lack of urgency when they need to be putting runs on the board.

A good shot from Asalanka almost reaches the boundary but Overton covers ground well to stop it.

Jacks takes his fourth over which goes for just three singles.

Former England captain David Gower, speaking on TNT Sports, gave some thoughts on the bowler during his last over:

"This is the problem with Jacks – he just cannot bowl a consistent length.

"Some are too full, some are too short. You never know what is coming and I think his action makes it hard for him."

Rehan Ahmed, who will be opening the batting for England later - comes into the bowling line-up for the first time today.

Asalanka spoons away his first delivery for a single and then punches a drive through the off-side which adds two to the score board.

Jacks hasn't had the best time in just the two overs he has bowled so far and his fielders haven't helped him out in his third.

A shot goes through gully which should've been easily stopped. No boundaries in this one but more singles.

Rashid shows off some good fielding to deny a boundary but the batting pair still manage to run for three.

Just a single from Dhananjaya in the rest of the over as we race through the first 20 overs of this one.

Jacks is back for England as the spin rotation continues, with length inconsistency seeing Dhananjaya stepping back to defend before swiping a full follow-up delivery to the boundary.

The Englishman switches up the rest of his deliveries which keeps Sri Lanka from adding to their score.

A big over for England with the wicket but Asalanka has slotted in fairly seamlessly. He gets a few runs from his first couple of balls faced.

This will be what Sri Lanka want to do for the next several overs as they look to build a strong partnership - the game is in the balance!

The Sri Lankan pair get themselves in a muddle and Mendis doesn't even wait for the third umpire's review.

He has long walked off by the time the decision of out is given.

The man who scored 93 on Thursday is gone and England are in the driving seat right now!

Rashid is really finding his stride out there now, a few exceptional deliveries with one producing a loud shout from the tourists.

A bit of a mishap between Joe Root and Jamie Overton which results in a boundary for the hosts.

Root pushes the ball past Overton whose foot is on the rope and four runs are given.

Oh dear England, this will be an over they won't want to look back on. Mendis cracks a shot away into the off-side, Duckett does well to get to it but he makes a mess of gathering it leading to it spilling over for four.

Bethell then sees his delivery squirm past Mendis and all of the fielders to run away for four more.

The hosts are ticking over nicely now. Rashid doesn't give away any boundaries but with more fielders back on the edge, the two Sri Lankan batters are settling for singles.

For context, Sri Lanka were 53/1 after 13 overs on Thursday. It might have been a slower start today but they're getting up to speed.

Brook saw enough of Jacks it seems as he makes another change with Jacob Bethell taking hold of the white ball for this over.

Bethell lucky to not give away a wide on his second ball but Nissanka and Mendis pick him off for a few singles.

Adil Rashid - deemed as England's dangerman in the bowling attack - comes into the action.

England will not want Mendis to get going like he did on Thursday but the pair at the crease keep the score ticking over well.

If you can't get boundaries, keep the scoring ticking over, and Sri Lanka are doing that.

Sri Lanka 36-1 (Nissanka 21, Mendis 7)

Will Jacks, who missed the first ODI, comes in for his first spell and Nissanka hammers him through the leg-side to square leg and for four.

A few singles off the over and that brings Sri Lanka's first powerplay to an end. England will be the happier of the two sides right now.

Dawson gives up his first runs with Mendis playing a shot to long off for a single and Nissanka squirming one into the leg-side.

Mendis plays a chip shot of sorts as it loops over the Dawson and falls safe.

The Englishman saves his best till last as the ball spins just past the stumps.

Sri Lanka 26-1 (Nissanka 15, Mendis 3)

A big swing and a miss from Nissanka off Curran's second ball of the over, you can feel the pressure building on the batters which is great news for England.

But boy does Nissanka respond on the final ball. Curran goes slower and he hammers it back down to long-on for six.

Sri Lanka 18-1 (Nissanka 8, Mendis 2)

First bowling change as spinner Liam Dawson comes into the attack and it's a very good over from him.

Bowling to Mendis, neither man is giving an inch, the Sri Lankan seems happy to dig in and protect his wicket.

Another maiden for England! The hosts were 37/0 after seven overs last time.

Sri Lanka 18-1 (Nissanka 8, Mendis 2)

A strong over from Curran as he gives Mendis very little to go off.

It isn't until the last ball that the Sri Lankan manages to score, pushing a shot into the off-side for a single.

Mendis - who was the host's top scorer on Thursday - comes in and has to defend the first two balls he faces but manages to push the last away to get off the mark.

After flicking the first ball away for four, Mishara looks to drive one through the off-side but Ben Duckett gets up to catch it well after a little juggle. A great start for England.

Curran starts his second over the same as his first with a wide but he adds two dot balls after.

Nissanka gets a thick edge on third ball of the over which races away for two runs and puts away a better shot on the off-side that gains his side another two runs.

Sri Lanka were 25/0 at this stage two days ago - if it wasn't for these wides too - it would be an even better start for England

Sri Lanka 7-0 (Nissanka 4, Mishara 1)

Overs 3.0

Overton back into the attack at the other end and he gets the better of Nissanka on his second ball.

He finds a good length and the ball squeezes under the bat of Nissanka before running through to Jos Buttler.

A maiden over for Overton.

Overs 2.0

The second over brings Sam Curran into action for the first time and his first ball is called a wide.

After two successive dots, Mishara cuts across a delivery and sends it to deep square leg to get off the mark.

Sri Lanka 5-0 (Nissanka 4, Mishara 0)

Overs 1.0

Jamie Overton starts the bowling attack again for England but his first delivery is 'friendly' and Nissanka hammered a drive through the off-side for four.

Overton follows with a better delivery that results in a dot ball but follows up with a wide - putting the ball too far down the leg-side.

The Englishman holds his own to prevent any more runs in the over.

Brook hoping to rotate the strike

Speaking at the toss, England captain Harry Brook said:

"We need to adapt to the situation and conditions.

"We have a bit of experience from the other day and we think the pitch will be similar so it's about rotating strike as much as possible against the spin. Knock bowlers off their lengths.

"We have lost lots of games away from home, which is disappointing, so we need to show our skills and play the situation."

Hosts name unchanged side

Don't fix what isn't broken is the message from the Sri Lankan camp as they look to seal the series by going 2-0 up in the three-game series.

Sri Lanka win the toss

It's rinse and repeat from the first ODI with home skipper Charith Asalanka winning the coin flip and electing to bat.

Brook admitted post-match on Thursday that losing the toss was 'crucial' in determining the outcome of the match.

It's the same again, but Brook and England will be looking to prove themselves as they aim to keep the series alive.

Brook slammed his mic on his leg after calling heads and getting it wrong - he needs a big showing today as much as anyone.

Crawley out injured

One change for England from the defeat two days ago with batter Zak Crawley sidelined by a knee injury and replaced by spin-bowling all-rounder Will Jacks, who has shaken off the illness that forced him to miss the first one-day international.

However, the most shocking team news for the visitors is that Rehan Ahmed will open the batting alongside with Ben Duckett with Jacks taking a middle-order spot.

Ahmed hit 27 from 21 balls, including five fours, batting at No 8 in the first game, having been called into the side after Jacks felt unwell.

England seeking revenge

As mentioned, Sri Lanka took the spoils in the first ODI largely due to their stronger batting display.

Wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis scored a terrific 93 not out off 117 balls that anchored his side to scoring a total of 271/6 from their 50 overs.

In comparison, only Joe Root and Ben Duckett managed to score a half-century for England with Zak Crawley and Harry Brook both falling for six.
