England's T20 World Cup hopes took a hit following a 30-run defeat to West Indies in Mumbai as the lower order faltered when chasing a target of 197. Adil Rashid bowled well but an unbeaten knock of 76 from Sherfane Rutherford was enough to leave West Indies in control of Group C. England next face Scotland in what has become a must-win match for both nations on Saturday.

England falter against West Indies to leave qualification hopes in jeopardy
Sherfane Rutherford's unbeaten 76 consigned England to a 30-run loss in Mumbai, handing them their first loss of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Despite removing both openers in the first seven balls, England let West Indies get away as Shimron Hetmyer was particularly destructive against Will Jacks's spin.
Adil Rashid produced another miserly spell, going for just 16 runs off his four overs and taking two wickets to boot.
However, with the exception of Jamie Overton, who took two wickets, Rashid lacked sufficient support from his bowlers as Rutherford and Holder put on a late blitz to reach 196-6.
On a high-scoring pitch, the total looked within reach, especially when Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell all got starts, getting England to 67-1 at the powerplay.
But West Indies spun their way back into the match, with Buttler, Tom Banton and Bethell falling within four overs.
Harry Brook and Sam Curran rallied but Gudakesh Motie got the skipper out caught and bowled to move his side closer to victory.
The lower order completely faltered for England, who lost six for 35 as they fell 30 runs short, with Curran stranded on 43 with one over left.
England face Scotland on Saturday in a must-win match for both, while West Indies can breathe easily with two wins and two matches remaining against winless Nepal and Italy.
Brook: We thought we had a chance
Harry Brook speaking to Sky Sports on whether he is confident about qualifying for the Super 8s: "Yeah, definitely. You have to be confident in this game. We obviously thank God we won against Nepal the other night, otherwise we'd be in a tricky situation. We obviously play Scotland and Italy next.
"We’ve just got to go back to do our homework on them and go back to the basics and see how we go. It was a little bit disappointing. It's never nice to lose a game but the West Indies played outstandingly.#
"Everybody knows how much power they've got and whenever you're slightly off your line and length, they manage to hit it for six. We probably felt it was chaseable, for sure. It probably didn't dew up as much as we expected and we thought we had a chance, definitely."
On his choice of bowlers: "That's the Adil [Rashid] everybody knows and loves. He was awesome. He really lobbed it up there and he gave them a chance to try and hit it for six.
"With his skill and his nous, he managed to keep his figures down and he got a couple of crucial wickets in there as well. I don't have any regrets in that [bowling changes]. I think that Jacks is an amazing bowler, we just didn't quite execute as well as we usually can.
"It’s just it's such a fickle game, isn't it, T20 cricket. It can go one or the other way. Salty [Phil Salt] had an amazing start today and whenever he gets going, it's going to be awesome to watch - he's such a brutal player. Then everybody knows what Jos [Buttler] is like. As soon as he gets going, it's going to be madness."

A night to forget for England at Mumbai. The middle and lower order fell apart, leaving Sam Curran stranded at the crease.
Now England turn their focus to Scotland on Saturday which could well be a must-win after this loss.

Curran skied another shot and wanted to come back for two, but was well short after Holder, after a fumble, recovered to throw to Joseph who whipped off the bails!

Curran finally gets hold of one and sends it deep into the stands, before keeping the strike. Too little too late?

Curran tries to grab a single after Archer gets crunched on the toe by a yorker, but Holder grabs the ball and gets a direct hit with Archer nowhere near as he jogged through!

Archer plays a lovely scoop off the fourth ball to get four at fine leg, but other than that Joseph's full length is too hard to get away for boundaries.
Joseph nails the yorker in the last delivery. England need something special and fast.

Here comes Hosein again. Curran needs to make his move quickly, but England are restricted to just ones and twos to start.
Curran tries to go after the fifth delivery and skies it, but it lands safely between midwicket and long on.
Overton now tries to go after the final ball but picks out Powell in the deep! Powell has to do a bit of juggling on the boundary rope, but executes it cleanly.

The first ball from Chase is sent upstairs but the ball clearly did not hit Curran's pad before his bat. The next DRS referral is just as bad as Jacks sends a leg before decision upstairs which was hitting middle stump three-quarters up.

Motie bowls too short on leg stump and Curran hits it high over square leg but then Brook is through his shot too early and chips back for Motie to take a return catch. A huge wicket for the West Indies.

A couple of wides off the over from Chase, including a couple down the leg side but he manages not to concede a boundary...until the last ball, which is short, and Curran pulls to midwicket for four.

Motie gets Brook's edge but it is wide of the keeper and it brings England's hundred up. Brook clubs a ball, not too stylishly or cleanly, but the placement saw him get a four and Rutherford hurt is wrist diving for the ball - he leaves the field. Good running off the last ball sees England grabbed a couple.

Good news for England that Bethell is fine to bat after banging his head trying in vain to stop a Rutherford six. He squeezes a ball through the covers rocking on his back foot off the last ball.

Salt tries to hit a short ball on leg stump over mid off but he catches the ball high on the bat and spoons a catch to Rutherford.

A wonderful pull in front of square from Salt off Holder's first delivery, sending the ball deep into the stands. He cuts the next ball firmly for four. Then a good ball gets the edge but goes between fielders for four to third man. After a dot Salt sends another into the stands over mid wicket. He then crunches a ball through extra cover for a four. What an over from Salt - 24 runs!

Spinner Hosein opens the bowling and is immediately hit over mid off by Salt. A decent recovery after that from Hosein as the Englnd batters can't get anything else off the square.
England need 197 to win!
England need to chase 197 to win their second T20 World Cup match after Sherfane Rutherford’s brilliant unbeaten 76 helped the West Indies to a big total.
The left-hander hit seven sixes in all off just 42 balls, setting England a target which they will only attain if their much-vaunted big hitters deliver.
Harry Brook’s side got off to a fine start after he put the opposition into bat, with Sam Curran and Jofra Archer gifted the wickets of Brandon King and Shai Hope.
Adil Rashid bowled superbly taking the wickets of Roston Chase (34) and Roman Powell (14) when both batters were set.
The other England bowlers were put to the sword by the West Indies batsmen going for 13 sixes in all.
When Rashid dismissed Chase with a bewitching googly, West Indies were 77-4 in the tenth over, but Rutherford then put on 51 in 4.5 overs with Powell and 61 in 5.2 overs alongside Jason Holder (33) to lead the Caribbean side to the big total.

Rutherford is on strike from the last ball and hits a huge six over long on. What an innings from the left-hander, 76 off 42 balls with 7 sixes.

Overton is preferred to Curran to bowl the last over but he gets some treatment as Holder hits another huge six, smashing a full ball high over wide long on. A wide slower ball is then hit high in the air and Banton catches in the deep.

Holder crashes a square drive which beats Bethell at sweeper on the off side boundary and then Rutherford just gets enough on a high pull to beat Bethell at deep midwicket, which sees the young England star hit his head on an advertising hoarding and go off for some treatment.

Rashid is brought back in to restore some order and he does just that. Holder goes for two swipes but misses. Then he sees Rutherford sky a googly but Rashid can't judge the high ball and drops a catch before throwing at the stumps and conceding a buzzer. Wonderful response from Rashid after a poor day against Nepal though, ending with 2-16.

A check drive from Holder goes high over the wide long off boundary. A remarkable shot. Holder doesn't catch the next ball as well hitting cross batted but it beats the fielder at long on for a second six. Holder hits a third six in the over off the last ball. Swiping cross-batted again but this was a sweet home run over wide long on.

Ruherford top edges over Buttler's head and one bounce over the ropes. The next ball is a slower ball which Rutherford hooks behind square for six which brings up his fifty off 29 balls. Overton recovers well to finish the over with two dots to Rutherford.

Rashid beats Holder first up with a massive spinning leg break and concedes just three runs off the over.

Rashid is brought on with the hope of steadying England's ship. After Rutherford gets off strike, a slow leg spinner is hit high in the air by Powell and caught by Overton five yards in from the long on boundary.

A delicate cut from Rutherford between fielders behind square on the off side for four. A couple of balls later a full ball is hit so sweetly over Dawson's head for six.

Archer returns to bowl and Powell hits a majestic lofted drive over the covers. Rutherford then swipes hard and edges to Rashid at third man. The spinner is about to catch on the dive but drops as he was heading over the ropes...but he drops the ball onto the toblerone. The last ball is clipped by Powell to fine leg for four. 17 runs off the over.

A risk from Brook bringing Jacks back into bowl after his first over went for 19 runs. The third ball sees Rutherford punch high over long one. A great exhibition of power. The next ball is shorter and Rutherford hits it over the midwicket boundary. In the end, England will be happy it just went for 14.

Just the four singles from Dawson's over. The match is going very well for England at present. Big hitting in the closing overs could change this obviously.

A slower ball from Curran is hoiked high into the air by Hetmyer but between fielders around the boundary. Curran then tries the same thing again and it got smashed high over cow corner and into the stands. The next ball on leg stump is clipped to the fine leg boundary.
