The 2026 T20 World Cup came to India and Sri Lanka this year as the sport’s biggest names competed for white-ball glory.
India were the defending champions, having beaten South Africa in the West Indies in 2024, while England had hoped to put their dismal Ashes series behind them to get their hands on the silverware they last won in 2022.
Major Test nations South Africa and New Zealand both looked for their first white-ball trophy. Italy made their tournament debut and Scotland took part at the last minute, replacing Bangladesh, who withdrew.
Co-hosts Sri Lanka were eliminated following a 61-run defeat to New Zealand in the Super 8, with The Black Caps going all the way to the final - only to be defeated by India, who retained their title thanks to a 96 run win.
England bowed out in the semi-finals against the eventual winners.
Did Pakistan play India?
There was doubt about whether Pakistan would take to the field for their Group A match against India, on Sunday, February 15.
The government's official X account announced at the start of February that Pakistan would not take part in the match, with PM Shehbaz Sharif saying the decision was to support Bangladesh, who said they would not play matches in India, and were removed from the tournament and replaced by Scotland.
However, after a series of talks, the Pakistan government confirmed the boycott of the match with India had been lifted.
Pakistan held the ICC Champions Trophy last year, but India refused to play in the country and had their matches moved to the United Arab Emirates.
