Winter Olympics 2026: Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo wins FIFTH gold of Milano Cortina Games in Team Sprint, closes in on more history

Norwegian superstar Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo made more history in Milano Cortina after he took his fifth gold of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. He and Einar Hedegart claimed the win in the men's cross-country team sprint on Wednesday, finishing ahead of the USA's Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher, with Italy's Elia Barp and Federico Pellegrino taking bronze.

Norwegian superstar Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo took his fifth gold of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games as he and Einar Hedegart took the win in the men's team sprint with a time of 18:28.9.

Klaebo is now level with America's Eric Heiden for the most gold medals in a single Winter Olympic Games. Should he triumph in Saturday's Mass Start, he will set a new record.

The 29-year-old became only the second Olympian ever - after swimming legend Michael Phelps - to win 10 gold medals.

Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher of the United States were 1.4 seconds behind Klaebo and Hedegart and took silver in the team sprint.

Bronze went to Italy's Elia Barp and Federico Pellegrino, who finished 3.3 seconds behind the leaders.

Klaebo has won every race at Milano Cortina 2026, breaking the Winter Olympics record in Sunday's 4 x 7.5-kilometre relay.

"It’s obviously very satisfying to make this happen," Klaebo said. "The team sprint is one of the most fun events, but also one of the hardest.

"There are so many strong teams and so many fast skiers, so it always comes down to tight battles. That makes it even more rewarding."

He added on the pressure to win: "It's part of being on the Norwegian team. It doesn't matter if I'm there or not - relays like this, in Norway it's a must to fight for the win, and it follows with a lot of expectations. I like these expectations and the high pressure."

Klaebo also reserved praise for team-mate Hedegart.

"He kept his calmness in the end and stuck to the plan, staying far in front and avoiding problems back in the pack. He did an amazing job, and it's well deserved that we are on the top now."

On the prospect of winning a sixth gold medal at Milano Cortina, Klaebo said: "We'll see. So far it looks really, really good.

"I'm going to try to charge up for the next two days and then back on Saturday with a lot of energy and hopefully to fight for a victory again."

Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist continued Sweden's winning run in the women's competition.
