Giro d'Italia 2026 Stage 14 recap - Jonas Vingegaard storms to third stage victory, seizes maglia rosa

Visma-Lease a Bike made a plan for Jonas Vingegaard to take the maglia rosa on the short, mountainous Saturday stage and executed it to the letter. As he soared to a third stage win of the race, the three-time Grand Tour winner took a healthy lead in the general classification. Having enjoyed nine days in pink, Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) finally succumbed to the inevitable, but did enough to stay in second and retain the lead in the best young rider competition.

The Dutch squad of so-called ‘killer bees’ controlled the race from the moment the peloton was released onto the up-and-down Aosta course. Their domestiques installed themselves onto the front of the peloton at the flag, denying the break the faintest hope of holding out to the finish. Nevertheless, they persisted. Led by the breakaway master Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) the group, which was a maximum of 25 riders strong, fought for every second of the lead that Visma capped at three minutes. That at least presented opportunities for a fight for mountains points, with 157 of them available to a rider that somehow reached every summit first.

Jardi van der Lee (EF Education-EasyPost) took the first 40, but just lost out to Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates XRG) on the third category climb, and Ciccone squeezed him out on the mid-stage category one. The Dutchman dropped away after that, allowing Ciccone to take the final category two and join him in the seventies, still some 30 points off Vingegaard with a final first category summit to finish. In between, at the intermediate sprint, double stage winner Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE) moved into the maglia ciclamino with a smart acceleration to take the 12 points he needed to overhaul Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step).

As they reached the foot of the final climb to Pila, Einer Rubio (Movistar), Wout Poels (Unibet Rose Rockets) Ciccone, Jan Hirt (NSN Cycling), Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Enric Mas (Movistar) were just two minutes ahead of the peloton. Nothing like as much as they would need to survive to the line. 

Visma used their riders up one by one, on the 15km final climb to Pila, setting a ferocious pace that rapidly thinned out the bunch. Sepp Kuss took a strong enough two kilometre turn to finish off the break, before Davide Piganzoli took over as Vingegaard’s launchman. The Italian stamped on the pedals until 4.6km to the line. Vingegaard came round him and did not look back. The closest man to him in the effective GC, Felix Gall (Decathlon-CMA CGM) did not try to hold the wheel, staying within himself to ensure he finished second on the stage, 49 seconds behind, and moved up to the virtual podium. Jai Hindley (Red Bull) rounded out the top three, nine seconds behind Gall, and moved into fifth place overall.

Eulalio crossed the line in 15th place, 2’49'' down. That ensured he held onto not only second place but the white jersey of best young rider.

I think this stage is the one I will remember the most. We made a plan from the start with the team. We wanted to control the race. That's what my team-mates did. They did an incredible job the whole day. It was really impressive how they rode. I'm so proud of my team-mates and I'm proud that I could pay them back. It's a super-nice win. We said we wanted to try when it got steeper in the end and Piganzoli almost rode everyone out of my wheel so I didn't have to try. That was really impressive, not only by him but the whole team.

His adventure ends, at 2'48 behind Vingegaard. That definitely is his last day in pink, but he'll keep the white jersey and I think he stays on the podium too.

That'll move him up.

Which means a loss of 52 seconds to Vingegaard with bonuses.

He's lived up to the billing, stamped his authority on the race, and moved into the maglia rosa.

Losing 30 seconds to Gall.

But Gall still hasn't cracked. He's doing the right thing, and you'd say that about the full top ten.

He's riding to another win, and the maglia rosa, but there's only 34 seconds to Gall on the road, which is running out.

Vingegaard... Gall, Pigazoli... Hindley... Arensman, Pellizzari.... Storer. Everyone is riding their own races at this point. We're seeing 1'48 to the maglia rosa who looks like he should keep the white jersey if nothing else.

He knew what he could do. Or rather couldn't do. Fifteen seconds opens up in a flash.

They all knew it was coming, and there was nothing any of them could do. Jonas Vingegaard stands alone, and he rides alone.

The moment of truth is approaching.

It's a final throw of the dice, but it's hasn't come up double sixes. The peloton is closing fast.

Kuss is finished his work, as Poels finally falls away from the front, leaving five of them.

Hindley, Gall and Storer are still there. So is Pellizzari somehow. Another second ticks by and Jonas Vingegaard is the virtual maglia rosa.
