Giro d'Italia 2026 Stage 16 recap - Jonas Vingegaard dominates on final climb to claim fourth win of race and boost GC lead

Back in Italy and quite a bit longer than today. Surely this one will go the way of the break? See you in the morning.

Jonas Vingegaard and his Visma-Lease a Bike team were a cut above the rest on the first stage of the final week. The Danish rider soared to a first victory wearing the maglia rosa, his fourth from as many summit finishes. 

It came at the expense, and to the great frustration, of Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) more than anyone. The 2019 King of the Mountains has been desperate to add a fourth career stage win to his own collection. Each time he’s headed out on the hunt, however, he has been denied by a Visma squad in full race control mode.

The Dutch destroyers had set out their intentions to win in pink ahead of the short, entirely Switzerland-situated stage. From the moment the race passed KM0 and the flag was waved, they made clear it wasn’t just talk. There were plenty of early attempts to form a break but Lidl-Trek were determined to get their man in the main move of the day. 

Although they eventually succeeded, and while comprised of a strong group of riders, the breakaway was never going to be granted permission to make it to the finish. As the gap grew no higher than three minutes, Ciccone must have realized and took his frustrations out on the mountains competitions, claiming maximum points from the first four climbs. That allowed him to close the KOM gap to Vingegaaard to 32 points but only until the final climb.

Before that came the intermediate sprint, which was Jhonatan Narvaez’s finish line. His early efforts keeping the break motivated and moving entitled him to a free shot at the points, which brought him within three points of Paul Magnier’s maglia ciclamino. Not long after Narvaez called it a day, with the break’s advantage slipping below a minute, Ciccone also gave up the ghost. That left just Einer Rubio (Movistar) and Chris Harper (Pinarello Q36.5) to slog on, until the latter went after the Red Bull sprint and left the Spaniard for dust.

All the while, Visma continued riding their own race, with the occasional assistance of Decathlon. On the final climb, as Harper hung on by seconds, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe picked up the pace, in the process putting their rider, Giulio Pellizzari out the back. The Italian was evidently not feeling well and he eventually finished 18 minutes down.

Jai Hindley was enjoying a good day but the stage belonged to the Dutch killer bees, who shed riders from the bunch one by one until only a handful remained. David Piganzoli was Vingegaard’s last lieutenant and when he began to slow, 6.6km from the summit, the maglia rosa set off in search of victory.

Felix Gall was once more the best of the rest but he couldn’t hope to keep on the Dane’s wheel, riding within himself before falling back to the company of top-10 contenders Hindley, Egan Bernal (Netcompany Ineos), Thymen Arensman (Netcompany Ineos) and Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek.)

But there was only one man in the game and Vingegaard cruised to victory by more than a minute to take an overall lead of more than four with five stages remaining.

His team-mate Piganzoli recovered sufficiently to finish fifth and is now a real threat to the white jersey of Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious).

Eulalio slips to fifth, allowing Gall, Arensman, and Hindley to each move up one place. Ben O'Connor is down to 9th, while Pellizzari, who came in 18 minutes down, has seen his overall hopes come to an end entirely today.

For comparison, at this point two years ago, Tadej Pogacar led by seven.

Just behind Poels. A mature ride from him, he might have fallen from the podium but wants to keep the white jersey. By my maths Piganzoli made up 90 seconds, reducing the gap to 2'17. Will Visma now allow him to ride for himself? You'd think they could afford to.

The Autralia taking four bonus seconds and maybe one or two more from Arensman, who isn't far behind in fourth. The Dutchman nevertheless will take a podium spot for now.

By more than a minute and a half, he has dominated once again. His first win in the maglia rosa, and the only time he's ever taken four in one race. And he may not be done yet.

And you can tell from his smooth pedal strokes that he's doing no more than he needs to. Even so, he's heading for the record time up this climb.

There's going to be a bit of a shuffling of the pack today, but it's about bragging rights more than anything. Piganzoli might now be thinking about the white jersey.

In the lead official car today, Lo Squalo leans out of the rear window to record the maglia rosa in flight. Vingegaard has made this look easy.

Although calling them chasers is obviously a touch misleading, because the gap is a minute and growing. Eulalio is now at two minutes, having found Wout Poels for company.

After a few minutes of relief, he gears up and rides back to the group of Hindley, Bernal and Arensman. It looks like they're coming back to Gall, who doesn't look as good as he has on previous summit finishes. Derek Gee-West has come back to them too. Up the road, Vingegaard has taken almost 50 seconds on everyone else in barely 1500 metres. A class above.

And within metres Jonas Vingegaard is all alone. Gall tries a few pedal strokes but know he's not in the same race. As before, he'll settle in to his rhythm and seek to consolidate second spot.

And then there was six. Gall is pulling a few faces. All of them except Vingegaard are on the limit.

It's looking a lot like Saturday, as the maglia rosa group is down to seven. Egan Bernal is on a good day and Arensman is still there as the gradient ramps up to 11%.

The Visma quartet, as well as the intense heat, has done the damage. I count three riders from Decathlon, three from Tudor, at least a couple of Net Company Ineos, and Derek Gee-West, while Chris Harper tries his back to hang on. Ben O'Connor rides with Eulalio.
