BLASI WINS LA VUELTA FEMININA: A HUGE MOMENT FOR SPANISH CYCLING

An epic win at the end of an epic week, L'Angliru did not disappoint.

We're sure there are plenty of riders who wished it wasn't on the agenda, but the one that seemed excited about it, Petra Stiasny, is the one who won. And what a ride by the Human Powered Health athlete, who was able to follow the initial attack from Gaia Realini further down the climb.

After the injection of pace from the Lidl-Trek rider, Stiasny took it upon herself to get to the front of the group and start pressing on. At 4km to go, Marion Bunel (Visma-Lease a Bike) attacked from an already select group which included Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime) and Paula Blasi (UAE ADQ).

Only Blasi was able to follow, as the inclines reached over 20% gradients. After managing to put some distance between themselves and the red jersey, Blasi accelerated and took a slender lead over the white jersey of Bunel.

At the steepest sections of the climb, Stiasny managed to ride across to Blasi and went over the top, taking the lead of the race. She climbed beautifully in the final kilometres, and took her first WorldTour victory atop a climb that has never before been raced in the Vuelta Feminina.

Blasi held on for second, doing enough to take the red jersey and win the overall classification - a Spanish home win at its Grand Tour.

We've been given a quick time gap at the flamme rouge, and Blasi is 28" back from Stiasny.

She's got 1KM to go, and it's started to flatten out a little. I say flatten, anything feels flat after riding 20% for god knows how long. Blasi will have to work really hard to get back to the front, but it looks like Stiasny has this in the bag.

It's damage limitation at this point, and we don't have time gaps but she's got her teammate working well with her to try and nurse her to the top of this beast of a climb.

They're still on the steeper section of the climb, but it slightly flattens out before the final. If Stiasny can hold on, she's golden. She won't be challenging for the red jersey, but a stage win would be incredible.

This would be a phenomenal victory for the Swiss rider, Stiasny, but also for her team, Human Powered Health. Their last win was courtesy of Maggie Coles-Lyster at Santos Tour Down Under at the start of the year.

Bunel, the white jersey wearer is struggling but she still sits in third place on the road. The gap between Blasi and Stiasny is slowly getting smaller. Will she be able to overtake and maybe even win the stage?

This looks painful. Riders are fighting their bikes, flicking between seated and standing efforts. Blasi is riding phenomenally, but Stiasny is slowly edging her way back to the front of the race.
