POGACAR: I WAS PREPARING TO SPRINT

Today a lot happened. In the beginning I was at the back, just following the wheels. I look down and see that we're going fast, the next moment I look up and see that the group has split. After 20 minutes we realized it wasn't so bad to let them go. It was a big group which is never good for collaboration, but of course still a bit scared. We kept it under control, Vegard [Langen] and Rune [Herregodts] did an amazing job. Later Decathlon came to help, then the rest of the team did a super job. In the end it was all under control, but you never let Remco go. Today was different, and I'm happy we succeeded.

It means a lot to win again one of the biggest races in cycling. I don't do many races; I don't have a lot of opportunities to win, so it's a lot of pressure to deliver on days like today. I'm really happy that we succeeded and couldn't be more proud of the team.

On La Redoute I was really going deep and could see that Seixas was a little bit on the elastic but on the top he came next to me. I was really impressed. Then he was pulling quite strong and we opened a big gap, which was really quite good. Back in my head I was preparing for a sprint because he was so strong but I tried on Roche-aux-Focons - I know the climb super well - it suits me well. Luckily he dropped but I was prepared to go head-to-head sprint.

And that's a very good third for him, however he sees it. The Belgian went long, and no-one could match him.

Not as easy as it's been in the past, but the job is very much done. He gives us the thumbs up just before crossing the line, saluting the sky as he claims win number 112 in the 112th edition of La Doyenne.

He's looking good, but unfortunately he's got an angry Remco Evenepoel behind him, and attacks flying. Seixas looks safe in second at 1'20 ahead.

It's all over bar the shouting, but we've had more of a contest than usual. More importantly we've seen a glimpse of the future, and it's thrilling.

Out of the saddle, he thinks third place is his for the taking. It's causing this, what is now group three, to crumble into pieces.

But Seixas isn't budging... until he cracks! 580 meters from the top, that is that. It's not over over but it's hard to imagine anyone coming back from this.

The penultimate climb of the race, it's too short and not steep enough, you'd think, for Pogacar to throw another punch. If there's any separation before the sprint, it'll surely come on the final Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons.

You'd think his directors will be telling him not to do too much, but do they really want to hold him back? Even if he doesn't win from here, the performance and the display will be what counts.

Plus about eight others, but it's very stop-start and more dropped riders are getting back on from behind. You can imagine how peeved he must be at the way this race has played out. It's not quite defeat from the jaws of victory, but there was surely a point earlier when he thought he was in the box seats.
