Jonas Vingegaard shows sporting side to not 'take advantage' after Remco Evenepoel crashes in 'big hole' on Stage 3 of Volta a Catalunya

Jonas Vingegaard said that he purposefully sat up and waited for the bunch to not take advantage of Remco Evenepoel's "crazy" crash in Stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya. Evenepoel and Vingegaard were some distance clear of the peloton when the former crashed in the race's final kilometer. INEOS Grenadiers' Dorian Godon went on to claihis second stage victory in a bunch sprint.

Jonas Vingegaard said he "didn’t want to take advantage" after Remco Evenepoel's "crazy" crash in a "big hole" on Stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya.
A dramatic final kilometre saw Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe's Evenepoel crash before a roundabout, and his rival Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) then concede the lead, allowing for INEOS Grenadiers' Dorian Godon to claim victory in a final bunch sprint.
Evenepoel later confirmed he was "still standing" and had not suffered any breaks, but said there were "no markings" on the road.
On the race’s hectic finish, Vingegaard told TNT Sports: ”I don’t know [what happened]. He just went over the handle bar and I just hope he’s okay. It looked really crazy but I just hope he’s okay.
”Obviously, I didn’t want to take advantage of a situation like that, so I decided at that moment to just wait for the bunch. I hope he’s okay, and he can continue tomorrow.”
Race favourites Evenepoel and Vingegaard separated themselves from the peloton and built up a 20-second gap before the former spun out of control at a roundabout while staging a late charge for the finish.

”I didn't expect the race to go like this,” Vingegaard added. ”I expected it to be a bigger [leading] group.
”He [Evenepoel] went and I jumped across to him. He was very strong on the flat. I’m happy I could jump across and work with him.
”I think at some points he wasn’t really happy with me but that’s cycling. That’s how it is.”
Evenepoel eventually managed to remount his bike after crashing and cross the line, with the three kilometres to go rule meaning that he recorded the same time as the remainder of the peloton.
”I'm still standing, so that's positive news," Evenepoel said afterwards.
"I wanted to go for the sprint and, right at that moment, there was quite a big hole. I hit it. I didn’t see and it wasn’t clear on the road. There were no markings, so I didn’t see it and lost my bars.”
When asked about the competition's reaction and Vingegard’s decision to slow down in the wake of the crash, Evenepoel replied: ”The co-operation was amazing.”
On the race, Evenepoel continued: ”I wanted to go for the finish line. We had quite a nice gap to go for the win. Normally, we would have sprinted for the win. But fate decided differently.
”There are some bigger injuries so we will have to see tonight and tomorrow morning how everything is reacting. But like I said, I’m still standing, nothing is broken, so that’s positive.”
Stage winner Dorian, who was also first to cross the line on Stage 1, said: ”Yesterday evening I was a bit annoyed. I wasn’t happy, so today I wanted to win again.

"It was not so hard at the beginning. Then it was a lot of stress and tension and we were in quite a good position.
”And then I saw Remco fool around with Vingegaard. All the riders on the team did an amazing job to help me catch them. It was amazing.”
On Evenepoel’s fall he added: ”I was fully concentrated on the sprint. For me, I caught them and just went for the win.”
Godon leads on general classification, 11 seconds clear of Evenepoel with Tom Pidcock in third (+16s) and Vingegaard fourth (+18s).
Thursday's fourth stage will see riders travel 174km from Mataro to Vallter.
