Jonas Vingegaard is chasing a first victory at La Vuelta with all-conquering rival Tadej Pogacar missing the third and final Grand Tour of the season after his Tour de France triumph. The 3,151km race will begin in Turin and span 21 stages before concluding in Madrid in the middle of September. Jonas Vingegaard is the big favourite for the upcoming La Vuelta, with rival and Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar skipping the third and final Grand Tour of the season.
Pogacar's fourth Tour de France triumph in July saw him continue his dominance of the sport, but his absence from La Vuelta, as he prepares for the Road World Championships in September, may open the door for Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).
The Dane, whose main competitor is likely to come in the form of UAE Team Emirates-XRG duo Joao Almeida and Juan Ayuso, is looking to claim a first red jersey.
The race will begin in Italy for the first time, getting underway in Turin, and will be made up of 21 stages, covering a total distance of 3,151km, before finishing in Madrid.

When is La Vuelta?
The 80th edition of La Vuelta gets underway on Saturday, 23 August in Turin, Italy.
Spanning 21 stages over 23 days, the race will eventually conclude in Madrid on Sunday, 14 September.

The Breakaway pre- and post-show will be hosted by Orla Chennaoui with analysis from Adam Blythe. Rob Hatch will be joined in the commentary box by 1988 Vuelta winner Sean Kelly and Robbie McEwen.
An expert team of reporters will be embedded within the race as it traverses 3,151km across Spain, Italy, Andorra and France to get to the heart of every story. This includes Anders Mielke, Andrea Berton, Thomas Bihel and Jip van den Bos, with three-time Vuelta champion and legend of the sport Alberto Contador presenting live coverage during the final stage from Madrid.

La Vuelta route
This year's Vuelta starts in Italy for the first time and will include four days of racing in the country’s north-western corner.
The peloton will cross the French border to finish Stage 4 in Voiron before crossing to Spain for Stage 5’s team time trial.

The race will then take in its fourth country, with Stages 6 and 7 dipping into Andorra.
The rest of the race will take place in Spain’s northern regions before heading to the centre for the final four stages and finishing in Madrid.
