And that should also tell you that Riccitello has taken over as the best young rider too. You have to take your hat off to him for the way he held on and held it together on the final climb. I'd also like to credit Torstein Traeen who finishes in 9th place. A fantastic three weeks he's had.

Credit to him for a strong second place against one of the greats of the generation, but you'd think he would have liked to have kept the margin to less than a minute.

The Australian managed to force a measurable gap, and a few bonus seconds, but it won't be enough. Tom Pidcock will add a podium finish in a Grand Tour to his illustrious palmares. He's silenced many doubters.

All it took was one attack, but he has shown why he was worthy of favourite status before the race and, for the occasional wobble, why no-one ever really doubted he would do it.

And another Grand Tour for Jonas Vingegaard, riding to one of the few titles Tadej Pogacar has never taken.

As the slopes hit 20% the red jersey puts his foot down and a sizable gap opens up immediately.

Hindley is doing what he can, but on these slopes, this rough concrete surface, he can't put in the attack he needs to separate himself from Pidcock. Vingegaard must know he's almost home.

I don't think the Portugese rider has it.

And Vingegaard follows him. Pidcock is losing position but digs deep and comes back to the wheel of Kuss.

Vingegaard, Hindley, Pidcock and Kuss. Riccitello is struggling as they reach the 16% and 17% ramps.

Followed seconds later by the GC fighters. Off the tarmac, onto the concrete.

As Sean Kelly says, if Ciccone and Landa had been allowed a minute or two more, they'd have a fighting chance you'd think. As it is, the clock says 16 seconds and the red jersey group is breathing down their neck.

The right turn off the main road and onto the 'extra' bit of the climb, rough and narrow and taking them over 2000m. Landa and Ciccone are hanging on, but with their lead down to 23 seconds, for how much longer?

But Ben Tulett and Sepp Kuss are still there for Jonas Vingegaard. Vine is breathing with his mouth open but otherwise looks like he's comfortable enough to keep going for a while yet.

Looks like he may not be able to help Hindley after all, and his white jersey is looking vulnerable too. Snakes and ladders.

But their lead is shortening, as the Vuelta comes to the boil. Grosshartner peels away with the gap at 44 seconds and Vine lifts the pace just a little, but noticeably. Felix Gall is swinging.
