Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw reflects on ‘very difficult’ Manchester City contract talks before FA Cup success - ‘A crazy few weeks’

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw said she was happy to put her "very difficult" contract situation behind her after helping Manchester City win the Adobe Women's FA Cup on Sunday.

Shaw scored the opening goal against Brighton & Hove Albion as City eased to a 4-0 victory at Wembley Stadium.

The victory secured City's first ever domestic double after being crowned Women's Super League champions for the first time in 10 years earlier this month.

But there had been questions over Shaw's future at the club as the end of the season approached with her contract set to expire.

Reports suggested Chelsea would attempt to sign the 29-year-old when she became a free agent but Shaw last week signed a new contract at City, remaining at the club for another four years.

And speaking to TNT Sports after the Cup final, the Jamaican expressed relief that she is able to move on following her contract negotiations.

"It's been a crazy few weeks. Lots of emotions, from not knowing where I'd be to signing a contract to be here, to win the FA Cup," Shaw said.

"It's been months. It's been a long couple of months. A whole lot of different emotions but I've always said that I wanted to be here. If I'm being honest, it's been very difficult, but towards the end, we got it done and I'm happy about that."

Shaw's proficiency in front of goal has been pivotal to City's success this season, finishing as the WSL's top scorer with 21 goals.

Since joining the club from Bordeaux in 2021, she has 83 goals in 93 WSL appearances and has three consecutive Golden Boots to her name.

She explained that her continued improvement on the pitch is down to hard work off it.

"I'm hard on myself, sometimes the girls say I'm being too hard on myself," Shaw said. "And it's in training normally.

"You know when you're in training and you're trying to correct your mistakes but they just keep on happening. And I always watch back my clips to see how I can be better and try to relieve them in training."

'What a way to end the season'

Shaw's opener on Sunday came largely against the run of play after Brighton had started brightly.

But the goal seemed to breathe confidence into City and they doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time through a 20-yard free-kick from captain Alex Greenwood.

And as Brighton chased the game, spaces appeared for City's attackers, with Aoba Fujino and Vivianne Miedema able to further extend their lead.

"Incredible. What a season. What a way to end the season," Greenwood told TNT Sports.

"We had a period in between winning the league to now and we enjoyed ourselves. We had a great time, we enjoyed being winners but today was about doing what champions do. And that's to come and win again and again and again.

"It's just a fantastic team to be a part of, I'm very proud of them and so glad we could do it front of our fans."

The cup win caps off a remarkable debut season for head coach Andree Jeglertz at City.

Jeglertz, who had previously been the manager of Denmark's international women's team, has lost just four games in all competitions in charge of City this season.

But he said that it was quite the transition to step into coach at such a big club.

"I think that the biggest challenge is to work with a group that has so many good football players, strong characters, individuals, who have strong opinions, everybody wants to play every week," he told TNT Sports.

"And that’s the toughest part as a coach, I think. Because we have too many players who can't play every weekend and to adapt to that has been a challenge. But that's my job."
