SHAW SCORES TWICE AS CITY COMPLETE COMEBACK TO KNOCK OUT DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

Bunny Shaw scored twice as Manchester City came from behind to knock out the defending Women’s FA Cup champions Chelsea and book themselves a place in the final for the first time in four years.

Just days after lifting the Women’s Super League trophy, it looked like the newly crowned champions would be heading out of the cup, when Chelsea led the game for 85 minutes before Mary Fowler pulled a goal back and Bunny Shaw levelled the tie in stoppage time.

City’s top scorer, Shaw, netted her second goal of the game in extra time to flip the scoreline as Man City took the lead for the first time.

It was the defending champions who started the best, with Alyssa Thompson and Lauren James both calling City goalkeeper Khiara Keating into action early on, and The Blues were quickly rewarded for their efforts when captain Erin Cuthbert put her side ahead.

On her 300th Chelsea appearance, the Scotland international fired home from the edge of the box, with her shot taking a deflection off Jade Rose to send Keating the wrong way.

The six-time champions thought forward Sam Kerr had them in pole position just moments later when she tapped home, only to see her goal ruled out for the ball going out of play, with no VAR in action to intervene.

A lack of clinical edge from the newly crowned WSL champions in the first half would see Chelsea head into half-time ahead, albeit with the help of goalkeeper Hannah Hampton who superbly denied Laura Blindkilde Brown's deflected effort from outside the box.

City survived a scare just after half-time when the ball ping-ponged around the goalmouth with Veerle Buurman unable to poke home before they eventually doubled their lead through Kerr in the 59th minute.

Kerr, who had scored 19 goals in 17 FA Cup appearances, finally claimed her goal as Keating failed to collect James’ cross, with the Australia international ready to pounce and tap home to put Chelsea in command.

That was followed just 10 minutes later when Kerr thought she had scored her second of the game only to see it disallowed for offside in the 71st minute.

It was substitute Fowler, with just her third touch of the game, who would pull a goal back for the WSL champions, scoring her first goal in over a year as she blasted her dipping effort past Hampton into the bottom-left hand corner.

A renewed sense of hope and the presence of Shaw saw the momentum swing as City equalised just moments later, with the Jamaican striker chesting down the ball before scoring a no-look attempt on the turn into the net to send the game to extra time.

Shaw grabbed her second of the game just seconds after missing a header when Yui Hasegawa snatched the ball from Hampton’s goal-kick, found Shaw, who headed home to put City ahead to complete the comeback.

Substitute Sandy Baltimore’s corner would test Keating in the second half of extra time, but Keating would have her own redemption story as the clock ticked away when Cuthbert’s threatening cross found Sjoeke Nusken, who headed goalwards only to be denied by an extraordinary save by the England international.

Manchester City will face Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley on Sunday, May 31, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max, in their first FA Cup final in four years as they look to complete the domestic double at the national stadium.

Karen Carney: "She’s a difference maker today. City are out of the game. Yeah, she missed a few chances but that chested control and turn, bang you’re back in it. Who else is out there that can guarantee this?"

Ellen White: "Very few strikers. In terms of what Andre is saying from a player perspective, I don’t know what more he can do than show the love he wants to keep Bunny and if he is showing that love, it’s got to be the hierarchy above making those decisions. But someone like Bunny, who can impact the game in the dying seconds and create something out of nothing, she’s so good in the air. Her physical presence, the way she can manipulate her body, she’s a phenomenal striker and in world football at the moment, I don’t know who has the same profile, goal contributions and the amount of goals she gets season on season. I’m not sure there is anyone out there."

Carney: "She backed herself in many ways. A player who runs her contract out, who says ‘I’ll be in control of my own destiny’, a lot of players wouldn’t because they would be scared of getting injured. She backs herself in many ways, on the pitch, in the goal and her team-mates give her the service, you know the outcome. It’s a very interesting time for both football clubs how they act, both in the transfer market. I still think she’ll be a City player next season."

"After winning the league, we wanted to take another step and that’s getting to Wembley to win another one. It was a hard one but we stuck together as a team, we grind like we’ve done all season and that’s the result.

"I trust myself, I know I can do it in and around the box. When that ball popped up, one thing was in my mind. I was just like ‘put it on target, put it on target’. I had a small glance and saw it was going into the bottom corner so I was really excited.

"I had a header just before that and I woofed it and I was like ‘if I get another one, I’m just going to put it into the back of the net’ and I think Yui did a very good press and put it in and I just got across the face of goal.

"It’s been a mad week, lots of ups and downs but I don’t care. I always said I enjoy my time at Man City and I always want to do the best I can, to get the club where it needs to go. Obviously we won the league and we’re one step further to getting to the FA Cup so let’s go."
