Sam Kerr's return to action was a long time coming and the Australian striker was back amongst the goals for Chelsea 20 months on from suffering an ACL injury. The Blues made it two wins from two games at the start of the Women's Super League season, with Manchester United also joining them on six points after a thumping win at London City Lionesses. Elsewhere, Leicester City stunned Liverpool.

Kerr nets on first Blues appearance for 20 months

Chelsea welcomed back Sam Kerr after the striker finally returned from an ACL injury that had kept her out since January 2024.

And it was a triumphant return for the Australian, who capped a hard-fought 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the Women's Super League with her first goal since December 12, 2023, and her 100th for the club.

Aggie Beever-Jones struck first in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Manchester City last time out, and the England international did likewise at Villa Park, heading home from close range after Ellie Roebuck vacated her goal trying to deal with an Ellie Carpenter cross.

A spectacular Ebony Salmon strike brought Villa level in the 34th minute, looping a first-time effort from the edge of the area over Hannah Hampton, who could only stand and watch.

It would take until 10 minutes after the interval for the WSL champions to grab the lead back, with former Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh seeing her low strike deflect off Missy Bo Kearns and into the bottom corner.

Kerr entered the fray with 15 minutes remaining and struck a scrappy third in the 93rd minute to make sure of victory for Chelsea.

Le Tissier and Malard shine as United maul Lionesses

Bringing up a century of appearances for Manchester United, Maya Le Tissier produced a captain's performance as London City Lionesses were beaten 5-1 at Hayes Lane.

Le Tissier gave the visitors the lead inside three minutes, striking her penalty straight down the middle after Melvine Malard was pulled down by Jana Fernandez.

And the captain turned provider for the second, clipping a pass out to full-back Jayde Riviere, whose cross from a tight angle arrowed fortuitously into the roof of the net.

Two minutes after half-time, Malard, who struck a brace in United's opening league game against Leicester City, got herself on the scoresheet, firing past Elene Lete after good work from Jess Park.

And the France international then headed in her second goal in the 50th minute, benefitting from a hanging Anna Sandberg cross.

It was the eighth goal The Lionesses have conceded this season, but they did at least manage a consolation goal through former United forward Nikita Parris, whose downward header got her off the mark for her new club.

But Park applied the gloss for United late on, finding the top corner with a superb drive.

Leicester stun Liverpool despite red card

Liverpool were hoping to bounce back from a humbling 4-1 derby defeat to Everton on the opening weekend, but could not capitalise on having a player advantage for most of the second half against Leicester City.

Shannon O'Brien received a second yellow for dissent in the 56th minute at the King Power Stadium, but barely three minutes later, the hosts took the lead through Emily van Egmond, who headed in unmarked from Janice Cayman's fine delivery.

Rick Passmoor's side withstood immense pressure for the remaining 34 minutes to pick up their first win of the season and leave The Reds pointless after two matches.

Spurs ruin Everton's Goodison bow

Everton began their new era at Goodison Park with a 2-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

A goal from Olga Ahtinen and a fantastic debut strike from Cathinka Tandberg sealed all three points for Martin Ho's side, who are one of three teams with a 100% record after two WSL games.

Ahiten was coolness personified with a clinical finish inside the box beyond Courtney Brosnan, after some sublime link-up play with Tandberg.

The stand-out moment of the match ultimately belonged to Tandberg, who unleashed an incredible first-time right-footed strike that looped over Brosnan from 40 yards out.

Brian Sorensen's side failed to find a route back into the contest, suffering a first defeat of the season following an emphatic 4-1 win at Liverpool in their WSL opener a week previously.
